I have a huge library of 3D Blu-Ray’s, which I have backed up and converted to Side-By-Side 3D MKV files. I am currently able to view these in the Plex app on my iPhone using a Google Cardboard. Not the best experience, but it works as a proof of concept.
I’d like to play the same SBS 3D movies on my new Apple Vision Pro (arriving this Friday).
But I expect that the Plex app will need a minor enhancement to render the left half of the SBS strictly to the left eye, and the right half strictly the right eye.
Without a minimal enhancement I expect that the Plex app when viewed full-screen will be showing some overlap in the handling of the left/right side views – like seeing part of the right eye’s view in the left eye, and part of the left eye’s view in the right eye.
I’ll be sure to update this thread next weekend, as to whether “it just works” or if indeed some minor enhancement will be needed.
Before I get to test it myself, it would be great if someone with first-hand knowledge on this topic could comment on what to expect (e.g. someone with early access to Apple Vision Pro).
+1 for this. I understand Plex not wanting to put resources into a port that might have relatively little traction (at least for now). But I would be willing to PAY a reasonable amount ($10-20) for such an app.
An update here. I am having good success with an app called Moon Spatial Video Player.
It’s coming the closest to playing SBS 3D correctly on Apple Vision Pro.
Just a minor issue with aspect ratio being double-wide on the 1080p “Full” MKV files that I converted from Blu-Ray 3D. Moon Player will surely fix it soon; the support has been great.
Possibly the problem is entirely due to some tag I should have set in my workflow.
Best thing about Moon Player is it supports iCloud Drive and SMB. I don’t need PlexPlayer in the middle, I can just share my movies directly from my Mac Mini to my Vision Pro over SMB. And on-the-go, I can use iCloud Drive or Photos.
