Hi,
I’m interested to test your app on TestFlight.
Thanks
But why cant ATV4 transcode it self?
Is it not powerful enough?

SimpleX just uses the tvOS built in player, so it can only play files that can play. I imagine VLC, and people with more video codec skill than me may well be able to get the Apple TV to play a wider range of files natively. Sadly, that is beyond my skill set!

Nice work, I’ll be looking for this on launch day !
Will you be supporting shared libraries?
Yup, SimpleX now works great with Shared Libraries. I’ve only just been able to test this, but I’ve now got it working great.

Just read the comment 2 posts up that you’ll be supporting remote servers too, that’s great ! Are you implementing a global search feature like cyberghost84 has on his plexconnect theme ?
When you say a global search do you mean across the whole server, or across multiple servers? I haven’t used PlexConnect in a year or two so I’m not familiar. SimpleX can currently search all of the content on the server you are connected to (but not all your servers at once).
When you say it can only play files that tvOS can play, can you give us a list of those formats? I assume it can play MKVs in Dolby 5.1 and that if we have MKVs with DTS it’ll play those in 5.1.

This is an accurate list. And Plex will Direct Stream the video and audio contents of MKVs without needing to transcode if the contents are in acceptable formats (H.264 etc)
So this is no better than plexconnect?
I still need a computer with PMS?
This looks awesome. I was hoping to grab the new ATV day one but was hesitant since I use plexconnect so much on my old ATV. Looking forward to installing it! Thanks.
Looks great, looking forward to try your app when I get the ATV4 next week
Will it be ready for launch next week? [-O<

The app will be ready for me to submit, but it will still have to make it through App Review so I can’t guarantee it’ll be there for launch day but I’m really aiming for that.
Also, Apple haven’t actually announced anything about app submissions yet, but I’m hoping that’ll come today or tomorrow with a final tvOS SDK.
Just so I’m clear, your app is independent of anything Plex may have. And so on day 1 we might see your app and/or, Plex’s app, or neither (if Apple doesn’t approve or approve yet). Is that right?
@Stevenson-Price no pressure if this question breaks your NDA, but can you talk about the different storage sizes? how much does the OS take and how storage is used? how big is your app? trying to figure out which one to get, the 32 or 64gb. I am not going to use it for games, it will mostly be for streaming services. i wonder how big these apps will be and if app thinning is enabled. thanks.

That is 100% correct.

If you’re going to use it only for streaming services it’s hard to imagine you would need the 64GB.
My app is literally 3.25MB right now. I imagine big companies’ apps will be significantly bigger than that (thanks to included graphics etc), but it’s hard to imagine streaming apps as big as 1GB, or needing as many as 30 of them!
That said, consider your future usage - maybe something comes along that caches video offline, maybe you change your mind and fancy some new game etc.
This looks great and simple, would be perfect for the kids or grandparents.
A couple questions:
- Does it have playlist support?
- Does it have shuffle support?
- Does it remember the filter options? That way we can set it to always display recently added shows when going into the TV section.
Thanks!
Are the API’s for universal search already accessible? Will SimpleX support it from the start?
