Simple X - A Native 3rd Party Plex Client for the new Apple TV (4th Gen)

@bigbadrabbit said:
Are the API’s for universal search already accessible? Will SimpleX support it from the start?

Nope, I’m afraid not. Apple have announced they will be opening the API up to third parties but they have not done so yet - currently only for select partners (eg Netflix)

i’m a developer with dev kit and i can test it

That said, consider your future usage - maybe something comes along that caches video offline, maybe you change your mind and fancy some new game etc.

thanks for that. 9-5 mac just posted this: Opinion: Apple's fourth-gen Apple TV will be worth the $149 gamble - 9to5Mac

When you say a global search do you mean across the whole server, or across multiple servers? I haven’t used PlexConnect in a year or two so I’m not familiar. SimpleX can currently search all of the content on the server you are connected to (but not all your servers at once).
Hi thanks for the reply, yeah with plexconnect you can now search all the shared servers at the same time, makes things extremely fast and convenient.

Hmm, OK cool. Well SimpleX definitely won’t support that for launch, but I’ll pop it on my list for future feature possibilities.

After seeing what Plex has done with the interface of PHT (–> now PMP) i think we can be sure that this UI is also coming to the official Plex app for ATV.

I really really appreciate your efforts for developing a Plex app with tvOS’s native UI! ^:)^

Can’t wait for it! Maybe a few more screenies?

Thanks! I’m gonna try and do a video demo in the next few days.

This looks great and simple, would be perfect for the kids or grandparents.

A couple questions:

  1. Does it have playlist support?
  2. Does it have shuffle support?
  3. Does it remember the filter options? That way we can set it to always display recently added shows when going into the TV section.

Thanks!

@Stevenson-Price any thoughts on my questions? Thanks

Sorry, missed this post.

It does not yet have playlist or shuffle support. Playlists are on my list to get to ASAP but I probably won’t be adding any major new features before launch now as I want it to be stable to submit to Apple as soon as they open submissions.

As for the filters thing, it doesn’t currently have “filters” as such, it shows a simple menu with “All Shows”, “Recently Added” and other options. So it is pretty easy to get back to the view you prefer, but it doesn’t default into it.

Thanks, can’t wait to try it out.

Looks great. I have a dev-kit and would be happy to beta test for you.

I have been waiting to hear if the new AppleTV will be apple to run Plex as well as the Rokue in terms of direct play.

So, for clarification (before I play my order), the new Apple TV will let me play my MKVs natively with video and audio? My DTS will pop up on my receiver?

It was posted earlier MKVs will play as long as they are in the H.264 format.

Also, I don’t see DTS listed as a supported audio spec on the Apple TV website http://www.apple.com/tv/specs/

This is pretty much correct. MKVs will be direct streamed when the content of the MKV allows. That means H.264 video will direct stream (by far the most common video format for MKVs), and any audio format listed on the Apple specs page will direct stream.

I don’t have a 5.1 setup to test with, but my understanding from testers is that it will direct stream Dolby surround, but DTS will be transcoded to Dolby. So you’ll get surround sound, but it won’t direct stream DTS.

I’m a developer, willing to help you with beta testing!

I can confirm that DTS gets transcoded to Dolyby Digital. All my media is encoded with DTS audio.
