Summary
Allow Plex to intelligently combine video and audio streams from multiple versions of the same media item, enabling users to automatically or manually select the highest-quality video and audio tracks available across their library.
Use Case
Many users maintain multiple versions of the same movie or TV episode for different reasons:
- A 4K release may contain the best video quality but only a 5.1 audio track.
- A Blu-ray remux may contain a superior Dolby TrueHD 7.1 or DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack but only be available in 1080p.
- Different releases may contain superior subtitles, commentary tracks, or alternate audio mixes.
Currently, Plex treats each file as a separate version and cannot leverage the best components from each source.
Example
Source A
- 1080p Blu-ray Remux
- Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Atmos
Source B
- 4K HDR Encode
- Dolby Digital 5.1 or even 2.0
Desired playback:
- Video: Source B (4K HDR)
- Audio: Source A (TrueHD 7.1 Atmos)
Result: Best available viewing and listening experience without requiring users to manually remux files.
Proposed Functionality
Automatic Mode (Recommended)
Plex analyzes all versions of a title and automatically selects:
- Highest quality video stream
- Highest quality audio stream
- Best subtitle track
before playback begins.
Manual Mode
Add a “Playback Source Selection” menu allowing users to choose:
- Video source
- Audio source
- Subtitle source
independently.
Smart Sync Engine “SyncX”
Since different releases may have:
- Different intros
- Studio logos
- Frame rates
- Minor timing differences
Plex could automatically synchronize audio and video streams during playback using:
- Audio fingerprinting
- Scene matching
- Chapter alignment
- Existing intro/credits detection technology
The synchronization process should be seamless and invisible to the user.
Benefits
- Maximizes quality without manual remuxing.
- Reduces storage duplication.
- Allows users to preserve premium audio tracks from Blu-ray remuxes while enjoying newer 4K video releases.
- Creates a unique advantage over competing media servers.
- Makes Plex a true “best available source” playback platform.
Optional Future Enhancements
- Cross-library source matching.
- Automatic upgrade recommendations (“A better audio track is available in another version”).
- User-configurable quality priorities (Video First, Audio First, Balanced).
- Support for external audio libraries and alternate soundtrack collections.
Why This Matters
Media collectors often spend significant time manually remuxing files simply to combine the best video and audio sources. Plex already excels at identifying multiple versions of the same content. Extending this capability to intelligently mix and synchronize streams would eliminate a major pain point and deliver the best possible playback experience automatically.
