Smart or Auto Playlists

Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, but I didn't see a discrete post for it.

I'd like to be able to create auto or smart playlists - that is, playlists that re-evaluate their filters every so often, so as material either gets added or changed to fit the criteria, it becomes part of the playlist.

For example, I'd love to be able to create a playlist that is:

Title: New or Well Loved Electronica Music

Filters:

  - Genre: Electronica

  - Rating: Must be unrated or > 4

Then as I rate music, it slowly starts building a better collection.

You can create smart playlists in iOS and web now - but it's a little subtle.

If you set the filters in web and create a playlist - it will act as a saved filter. In iOS you need to scroll to the bottom of the filter view and select the 'save playlist' there.

If you're successful, you'll see a little cog overlay on the playlist thumbnail, and it will update as future tracks/items match the filter.

Hope that helps!

It would be nice if these had the ability to use boolean terms much like an iTunes Smart Playlist.  So, for example, instead all movies in the genres Comedy OR Horror showing up, only movies that meet both genres of Comedy AND Horror show up.

I also greatly desire auto playlists (and boolean terms). For example, I’d love to have a playlist of just my 4 and 5 star songs excluding “Spoken Word” genre. Or, a playlist of all songs with thee stars or more that are not tagged “Christmas”. Also being able to include how recently I’ve last listened (or how many times) or to create a “top X list” that would pick only a certain number that best met the criteria (or randomly chosen from those that match, re-choosing after listening or every so often or after refresh).

Smart playlists certainly exist, as Dom explained, but IMO the interface for creating them is pretty lacking, and there’s no way to edit the rules for a Smart Playlist after you create it. Definitely need a more exposed and robust interface for what could arguably one of PLEX’s most powerful curation features.

Is there a way to exclude particular tags? Also any way to base on date added, times listened, and/or when listened to most recently? I can handle kludgy or obscure interface if those features exist.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (custom filter → smart playlist; full editing in Plex Web)
