Smart Playlist Ignoring Filters

I setup a Smart Playlist for a TV Collection with a Filter of ‘Episode Unplayed is true’ (per suggestions from moderator here) so that the Playlist only shows Unplayed episodes.

I am getting episodes I watched already almost DAILY coming up when I click on Shuffle to randomly pick an episode for me. It’s like the Smart Playlist isn’t updating watch status after we watch something through it.

Anybody else having this? Anybody have a solve?

I’ve just deleted and rebuilt the Playlist from scratch to see if that helps, but hoping for some options to look at if it doesn’t.

Are you definitely using Episode Unplayed in your filter and not Unplayed Episodes

Sorry for the delay, busy week. Definitely (See screenshot below).

I rebuilt the Playlist from scratch on Thursday and this weekend EVERY time we tried a Random viewing it started with an episode that we have seen already!

And you are definitely saving as a smart playlist, not clicking “save as - add to playlist” but “save as - create smart playlist”, so the little cog icon shows in the top corner of the poster, and you can click the three dots to edit filters?

Are you saying that you are filtering down a collection of episodes?
The term “collection” does mean something very specific in Plex. https://support.plex.tv/articles/201273953-collections/
If this is indeed a collection, then I don’t think that you can filter it down further.

Definitely

I’m not trying to filter it “further” I’m trying to get the fitlers to WORK properly because they are not.

I just can’t recreate this behaviour.

If you click on edit filters does it show played episodes there, or is it only when playing them?

How are you watching the playlist, is it the account that creates the playlist?

When I go to the Collections, the Play counts are going down on each show after watching, but from the same page as the screenshot when I click Shuffle we get episodes that have been played more often than not.

I keep the server up to date (With Plex Pass updates) and have recreated the Playlist twice now with the problem persisting. It’s like it’s ignoring that one filter because it listens to the other filters (eliminating a few shows that are not good to watch in random order).

The numbers on the posters are not play counts. They are the numbers of “unplayed” episodes within.

Whatever they are, they are changing regularly despite continuing to get episodes that have been watched in full.

I’m confused now, what do you mean “when I go to Collections”? Are you not playing a playlist?

If you are playing a collection then you need to recreate the playlist filters to save as a smart collection

When I create a Smart Playlist it shows up under Collections. I don’t make a Collection and I don’t do anything extra.

Under TV Shows my Smart Playlist shows under Collections. I did not do anything to put it here, it shows here after I create it.

Going to the Smart Playlist I see all the shows contained and the counts for episodes that are unplayed. Those numbers change regularly when watching.

When I click SHUFFLE it plays episodes that have been Watched already

Despite my Filters are set to not include them. IF episode is UNPLAYED (TRUE) then include in Smart Playlist, therefore, when I click SHUFFLE in that Playlist, it should only play episodes that have not been Played (Watched), but that’s not what it is doing!

If this doesn’t clarify, I’m unsure what information you are looking for!

Strange, in my experience playlists show up in a tab called playlists, collections show up in a tab called collections and neither tab shows any other different type.

Can you screenshot the menu that appears if you click the edit icon next to the shuffle button? Does it have an “Advanced” tab at the bottom?

You created a collection of shows. The filters tell Plex which shows you want to be part of the collection, not which episodes.

Clicking shuffle plays random episodes from the list of shows in the collection. There is no filtering applied here.

This is expected behaviour.

Create a smart playlist or an episode collection instead.

If you look at previous screenshots, it absolutely has a filter for EPISODES that should filter out Unplayed episodes.

I did this based on another thread where a Plex Moderator said that filter was needed to only include episodes that have not been watched.

As mentioned in other post, what is this filter for if not for this specific purpose? I added shows based on Genre and used provided filtering options.

Regardless of it being a Playlist or Collection there are Filter Options specific to not including episodes that have been Played already.

Otherwise what is the purpose of the filter to begin with if it simply doesn’t work with Collections vs a Playlist.

Basically just do what swift panda says - you have indeed created a smart collection of shows not a smart playlist of episodes

In this screenshot next to advanced filters change it from “TV Shows” to “Episodes” then save as smart playlist (and if you always play it shuffled you can even change from “By Title” to “Randomly” then you don’t even need to shuffle play as it will always be random)

The second dropdown above the filters says “TV Shows”. You are filtering for entire shows with unplayed episodes. You are not filtering for individual episodes. Change the drop down to “Episodes” to filter for individual episodses.

Your show “Home Town” matches the filter because it has episodes which are unplayed. By filtering for shows, you are telling Plex to add the entire show to the collection.

Ughhhh. I had no idea those were part of the filters /facepalm. I only used the ones under the ‘match’ drop-down.

I’ll update this and see how that affects it.
