Smart TV transcoding audio

Transcode%20Audio%202 Transcode%20Audio

Hi! I have a TV ( Samsung UE55MU6455) that won’t let me play a movie without transcode.

First picture:
Playing same file on my computer vs my TV. On my computer it don’t transcode at all.

Second picture:
Both on my TV but, left one is transcoding Audio, but when i manually change to (AC3 5.1) it can direct play.

My question is. Why can’t my tv handle something my computer can? And how do i make my TV to choose a file it can play so i don’t need to change it myself every time. Thanks

because your tv cannot direct play HD audio that comes with 4k.

this is a problem with nearly all smart tvs.

if you choose an ac3 5.1 or stereo audio track then it won’t transcode.

even if you have a soundbar or receiver, the ARC (audio return channel) of hdmi does not support HD audio.

If you have a tv and receiver that supports E-ARC, then your tv can (theoretically) send the HD audio to the receiver so that it can be decoded directly by the receiver and sent out to your surround speakers.

this may or may not help see also @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ

as to why your pc can handle it, is because the PMP app can decode the stream itself (ie it doesn’t need the server to convert) and/or send the audio stream to the PC soundsystem which either sends out the already decoded audio stream or decodes it and sends it out on its own.

Can’t i default a certain type of audio?

yes, what ever is the first audio stream.

you will need remux your files so either the stream you want is first, or remove the hd audio streams (and save some space if you don’t ever intend to get an atmos/surround system).

Thanks! How do i “remux my files” and how do i remove atmos/surround sounds?

well, if you are not already familiar, you will probably have to learn a whole lot of confusing stuff about video files, codecs, containers, and the various tools to create and modify them.
