SOLUTION: Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error

You removed the library file and then added it back? If so, I’d need to switch all movies again that I have changed to a metadata language, right?

Rather than doing the full “Plex Dance”, perhaps having Plex do an “analyze” of each library manually would be a better solution?
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200289336-analyze-media/

Instruction is provided there for how to do all in a library, but I’d probably select a few known ‘not working’ videos first. Instructions are included for single/few/all also.

Just tried to “analyze”, but no change. Movies still not working.

Was worth a shot, and as this error seems to be different for some people, it may (or may not) work for others. I would have thought that, of Oreo14’s Plex Dance, it would have simply been the re-analysis portion (after re-adding) that corrected the issue.

True, thanks. I removed the movie and scanned the library. Then added it back and scanned again. Still not working.

Movie works with Emby and also with VLC. Plex just seems to be broken for some movies.

Hi, I’m getting this error (“Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error”) and this thread seems successful in dealing with it - if you guys could please check my logs and point me to a solution I’d appreciate it.

Version 1.14.0.5470
Windows 10 64 bit
Plex Media Server Logs_2018-12-03_13-37-35.zip (2.1 MB)

The most recent error happened at 1:35pm local time (Central). I’m getting this error while attempting to play video on my PC locally as well as on Plex apps such as the Apple TV app. Typically I’ll be able to watch anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes of video before the error occurs, although it seems pretty random.

I was just having this issue (MacOS v1.13.9.5456)
Was fixed removing the blank spaces on the movie title, hope it helps.

To anyone with this issue on Windows 7 with version 1.14.0.5470, I was having this happen all over the place with totally random movies being effected. I just tested it with 3 movies individually… if you refresh the metadata it seems to fix the issue. This might be one off to be as my logs were throwing xml issues but it might help someone!

Hello,
I’m getting the error:
Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error

I can stream original quality on and off of my local network, but I can’t transcode on or off of my network.

I’ve been transcoding with no issue for months now, then all of a sudden I can’t. I have auto-update on so I’m not sure if this is caused by a recent update or some error on my server.

I’m running:
Plex Version 1.14.0.5470
Unraid Version 6.6.5

Logs attached
Plex Media Server Logs_2018-12-04_12-41-22.zip (5.2 MB)

Thanks for any help.

I just want to chime in that I’ve been having the same issue, much more severely though. I’m getting lockups, random time skips of seconds, to minutes in playback, and on every platform. I use a monitoring app (Tautulli) and receive alerts about buffering, failed playback, etc.

This started happening around v1.13.x, and only on iOS. I do not know exactly when, because it wasn’t very apparent at first. Just a once in awhile thing. However, now, it’s making playback nearly impossible.

It’s something with large/exisiting DBs, as I tried setting up a fresh server on the same host/install, and Plex plays fine. I tried setting up a new library on the existing DB, but still have the same playback issues. Any changes to streaming brain settings does not change anything. Switching from Auto-Quality, etc.

In the attached logs, I was watching media from the new library (TV Shows 2.0) and let it play for about 9 minutes. I then paused playback and closed the app. Opened the app and tried to continue playback. It opened the first frame of playback where it should have resumed from, but sits at 0:00 and does not load. The only way to get this to play now is to mark it as unwatched and start over.

Hi Plex and Community! I am also having issues with the Conversion Failed.

Server: v 1.13.5.5332 on Nvidia Shield
Client: Nvidia Shield
Files Hosted: Local Synology SMB Share to Shield. Connection over Ethernet, not Wifi (for both Shield and Synology)

I am using an Nvidia Shield to serve and play when this happens. I rarely use it on any other device for streaming video, so have not tested that. What typically happens will be that I am watching a movie and about 20-30 minutes into the video, there starts to be some brief screen freezes. The frequency of this momentary freeze (like a single stutter) increases slightly over the next 5 minutes or so until the error pops up and then I have to exit out of the application, wait for it to stop and then start it up again. From there I can resume from where the freeze happened (starts from that point) and it continues without problems for about another 20-30 minutes.

I have my media stored on a synology which is shared via SMB to my Shield. I have only noticed the problems since I started using the synology, but in truth, that could be a red herring, as we had not been watching movies and TV on plex very much lately before that, and some of the time, I was actually using the plex server I had on my previous (more powerful) server.

Can anyone help me solve this issue? Thank you!

I started getting this error right after the latest update for the Roku. Things worked just fine before that. Ugh!

Update: I watched a dvd rip last night, and did not see this issue.

Elf and Stranger Things I have on Bluray and they exhibited the behavior I discussed above.

I rip my movies as MKV and then used handbrake to convert to H.264 or H.265

@sa2000 are you still available to look at logs for this issue? I described my issue in one of the recent posts above and included logs. It’s been really difficult to use Plex w/ this error. Thanks.

i do have a backlog to go through. The answer is yes but i will be trying to deal with my backlog in sequence

I am also having the same issue. i have uploaded my log file and database file. The database file is large. If you need me to upload it here I will.

When prompted just hit ok/enter. There is no username or password

I’m having the same issue, it started two updates ago (currently running Version 1.14.1.5488 on Linux) I’m streaming to my LG SmartTV with the Plex app on it. I have a DD5.1 sound system. The videos encoded in DD play without any problems, but videos encoded in DTS (which my home theater does not support) yields this error message. If I turn on “DTS” in the sound settings of the LG SmartTV app, the videos with DTS start playing without issues, except that there is no sound, as my sound system doesn’t support it - so it is without a doubt a transcoder issuse. As I already mentioned, this worked perfectly on previous versions of Plex Server.

The transcoder is failing because it is getting an error on setting up the segments list

These type of errors were last seen when Microsoft released a faulty Windows 10 Update in July 2018 which they corrected with a further update a few days later.

For some reason the errors have surfaced again and there are diagnostics from other user that are being investigated by the Plex Media Server development team.- See my post here Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna - #68 by sa2000

If you can easily reproduce these errors, you could try and get similar diagnostics to what @ben-page provided and i will pass to the development team in case it has some extra clues

The specific diagnostics needed is a loopback packet capture on the machine and rawcap.exe has been suggested by me. If you do provide that with logs, please upload to dropbox or google drive etc and send me link by Private Message

Details of the required diagnostics are given in the forum thread I linked
