I searched the forums to and fro before posting this so I hope it’s not a duplicate.
I’d like to see Plex provide a means to save each user’s navigation bar preferences, including library order and pinning choice, across devices. (Essentially, saving to the user’s profile although that may not be the correct technical nomenclature.)
Some might argue that simply re-creating a user’s navigation bar preferences on each device is no big deal. But when you multiply several users in your account, a lot of libraries, and a number of devices this becomes rather cumbersome to keep in sync. And an inconsistent user experience when it is not (particularly with kids or older adults ).
To potentially further explain, one approach to implementing this would be something like:
The first time a user changes their nav bar preferences on a device (changes the library order or pins/unpins a library) it asks if they want to create a global nav bar setting. This results in either a global setting being created in the profile or a flag that the user declined to create one. If the user decides they want to later, they can activate it through a toggle somewhere.)
After that, each device not already using the global settings (i.e. a new device or one that hasn’t seen the option before this feature is deployed) prompts the user if they want to apply their defined global setting or keep the local setting just for that client.
When a user has global settings, an option to (“adopt”) them (and thus override the local setting) exists. This could be accomplished by adding a context menu to the permanent “Home” entry at the top. (Also could be where the “toggle” from #1 is shown.)
Any change to the nav bar settings on a device using global settings prompts the user to choose to update the global setting or create a local setting for that client (thus opting out of global setting for that device unless they toggle it back on).
Just as an example for a point of reference, this is similar to the way you can sync your Firefox settings across multiple devices using a free Firefox account. In the case of Plex, I imagine the user’s profile is that mechanism.
I would love the option to set certain settings from the server side which would pertain to all users and devises accessing the server. For example, being able to update the pinned libraries (and order) once and have it propagated to all devices and users of the server would be fantastic.
This should be an optional feature, but would be extremely helpful especially when trying to setup Plex with family members who may be older/have difficulty with the UI.
Similarly, being able to tell Plex to default to the “Library view” rather than recommended would save the vast majority of my tech support calls from my confused parents. While there is a way to “Remember selected tab,” as has been discussed this does not always work and should be able to be set from the server side in certain situations.
I’m sure there are other settings that would be helpful to be synced from the server side, but this is just some that come to mind. Basically, it would be great if Plex had a “grandparent mode” for better customizing/managing the user experience.
agreed and if some people wish to have different pinned libraries and different order on their devices(ipad, andoid tab etc) they can do that manually after getting a fixed starting point reflected from the main server
Would love this feature. I have my home screen with the pins i want in the order that I like. I would love it if when I login to a new device that it just goes straight to my home screen looking the way that I have setup before with no extra fuss.
I would love for this to be implemented! My in-laws just got a new device and they are not tech savvy at all and I had to go over and set it up the way they like their home screen. They prefer the movies tab to be first were I like to have tv show first. Also for some reason it would put watchlist and discover pins at the very bottom and I had to move them up more towards the top. This would eliminate having to repeat those step every time someone in my family gets a new device. Just login and they are good to go.
I would like the ability as admin or as the home user profile, the ability to reorder the library’s once and have it apply on all devices. I modified the order of the library only to notice it only applied to a single devices (my current device) and it was not propagated across the user as a global change to the profile.
If Plex can randomly add sidebar items to all of my devices then I should be able to add, remove, and reorder whatever I want across all of my devices at once also. Rentals was just added to every single device’s sidebar without any warning.
It would be REALLY great if our individual profiles/settings/etc were roaming, so that our homepage was exactly the same so that no matter which tv or pc or whatever we logged into, clicking on our profile would be precisely the same everywhere.
Yes, would definitely love this. beats running from tv to tv so that the listed library order is consistent, especially when you add or remove libraries.
