[SOLVED] Plex doesnt do HW transcoding on Ubuntu 18.04 with i9-9900 (tone mapping related)

I have performed another clean install of Ubuntu 20.04 and installed Plex by adding the repo and using apt. It gave me some warnings about missing 5 intel-compute libraries, which the .deb install did not show me any warnings about. HW transcoding did not work after installing those 5 libraries and restarting plexmediaserver.

HW transcoding did start working, as before, after following through MrSliff’s post.

Just adding a note from someone who had a lot of the same issues as described in this topic.

I’m running a system with a i5-8500 on Ubuntu 21.10. I couldn’t get hw transcoding to work when having installed the required ocl-icd-libopencl1 beignet-opencl-icd packages. Without these installed, hw transcoding worked but tone mapping was done on the cpu instead.

In the end the solution was to move my Plex install back to ubuntu 20.04 instead of 21.10. Just by doing this and installing the abovementioned packages solved all my problems.

Hope this helps someone!

Ugh I have been looking for any other solution other than wipe OS and install a 2 year old version of Ubuntu to get around this. There has got to be a way to get this working in the latest release.

I have no issues with hw transcoding until I enable HDR Tone Mapping. I can live without it, I don’t need it just some of my users, and they never complained about HDR content looking crap before but it would be nice to give them a better experience.

Subscribing to thread for new developments.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS , which will be supported for 5 years, works.

Ubuntu 21.x will only be supported until April, 2022. It has been demonstrated to fail with HW transcoding.

Ubuntu 20.04 will be upgradable to 22.04 LTS when available.

Recommendation is to NEVER use odd-numbered releases of Ubuntu because:

  1. They contain new, prototype code, destined for the LTS branch
  2. They are not supported as soon as the next year release is available.

It is likely just down to semantics as to whether Ubuntu 21.x is failing or Plex HW transcoding is failing (on a non-LTS version of Ubuntu) on 21.x. Once 22.04 is released hopefully ubuntu will fix this issue or change back to the same subsystem used before that does not cause the error - If not, does 22.04 become the new target for testing for new Plex releases? (And as a result, this issue then changes from “ubuntu is broken” to “Making HW Transcoding with HDR tone mapping work on the latest ubuntu is on the roadmap”?)

Hopefully the issue is just a weird ubuntu bug in 21.x and it resolves itself!

We collected a bunch of data and are now doing a deep dive into our results to figure out what the next step is.

Has there been any progress regarding this? I just realized I am having the same problem.

Was this fixed in 1.25.9.5721-965587f64?
