It’s available on infuse and some other tvOS apps, so it shouldn’t be an Apple issue

Any chance the Apple TV will ever get a more full-featured video player?
I’m also hoping to see the ability to skip/go back using the remote. I usually use Siri to get around it, but it’s such an icky workaround.

The iOS Plex app has a pretty classic interface featuring all the usual buttons. I thought Apple is all about consistency. But if there are some design guidelines that Plex has to follow only on the AppleTV I doubt they’re under NDA. If Apple limited this then Plex devs could just say “cannot be offered”.

Just bought Apple TV after using Nvidia shield for almost a decade. Thinking about returning it- this is pretty pitiful
I can’t believe this isn’t a thing. Should be a basic item for a media player for crying out loud.

+1. And I add that you can’t use your iPhone as a remote as good as you can do in the Smart TV App: It doesn’t allow to access and modify the playlist. The iOS Plex app doesn’t recognize that the Apple TV Plex app is running.
Once again Apple shows how much it can be thoughtful in details and then make basic things as inconvenient as possible. Sometimes it seems to me that Apple has a department, which is specially engaged in that thinks up how to make the most inconvenient basic things without any logic, who could interfere with the buttons for switching to the previous and next video, because they are in the overlay, which is hidden when viewing and for so many years no one from ui/ux engineers thought about it? As far as I understand, this is a standard player that is available to the developer from the operating system, because its overlay is the same in a large number of players, that is the development of Apple… On the other hand, for example, YouTube clearly uses its own player, that is, the developer, on his part, can not use the standard, and make their own, so perhaps this problem can be solved by plex developers, but it is not solved as well as apple.
I’m a heavy user of the “shuffle” option for watching videos. Other Plex clients allow you to quickly skip to the next video. RokuTV’s Plex client for example you can press down and then either left or right followed by enter to move to the previous or next video respectively. I am requesting a similar functionality for Apple TV’s client.

Yes please! Every other app has thing feature, why not the Apple TV one? Very strange
After using Plex on Roku for years my Roku TV (TCL) died and when I went to buy a new one, the only top end TCL models were Android/Google TV so I gave in and purchased it .
I quickly returned is because it was lacking Roku only features like being able to look at episode or movie cast without stopping playback…
So pick your TV streamer for Plex wisely because as you’re now discovering, not all features and functions are available on all Plex players. 
I know Plex is very adverse to document anything or publish server, app or API roadmaps, but I really think they really owe it to their customers and their customers friends and family stream on Plex too be up front about what the minimum features users should expect for all player devices and what features are unique to one or more platforms.
