About half of my media is not accessible via DLNA clients, but it shows up fine via plexweb or plexamp clients. I have multiple devices and apps that can use DLNA servers.
Usually the artist will show up, but if you go under that I just get “no media found”.
Tried rescanning, no effect. If I switch to the old scanner and rescan everything some of the albums will return, but not all.
I notice that any album that plex thinks is a “compilation” or a “live album” will not appear via DLNA if you browse the library by artist. This seems to include basically any “Greatest Hits” type album or concert. So for example, the following albums will NOT appear under the respective artist via DLNA (but does if you use a plex client app like plexamp):
Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975
Neil Young - Greatest Hits
James Taylor - James Taylor’s Greatest Hits
Grateful Dead - The Best of the Grateful Dead
Simon and Garfunkel - The Concert in Central Park
The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers- Greatest Hits
Creedence Clearwater Revival-Chronicle: 20 Greatest Hits
In each of these cases, the AlbumArtist field is marked correctly, but listed via DLNA, won’t appear under the artist, although it will appear if you browse by album at the top level.
I have lots of albums, so I almost always browse by artist first. Some time ago I switched to Jellyfin which works at least works correctly. But it would be great to stick with plex for this if they would just fix glaring bugs like this.
IIRC there’s been some reports that this can happen if you let Plex group releases (albums) by types (e.g. album, compilations, live albums, eps…). Plex DLNA will apparently only publish the regular albums.
The releases you’ve listed seem to be mostly compilations.
Until this is being addressed (and if this is the issue you experience), you could set Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Group albums by type to disabled.
Yea, thanks, changing that setting works for me! That’s a good work around. The albums, grouped by type or not, should still obviously appear under the correct artist as they do with the plex clients, but this gets me what I want. Thanks!
