Sort for 'Date added' seems odd

Hello,
I’m using
Web-Client Version 3.108.2
Plex.app for Mac Version 1.3.1.916-1cb2c34d
with Plex Server on Windows Version 1.16.5.1554

When sorting my Music Library to “date added”,
I’m getting wrong results, like added before 17 years, or 3 years…
I’m running the Plex Server since some weeks, so having something added before that time is not possible.

Is this a bug, a feature or something else, I can fix somehow?

This is intended behaviour. You are probably expecting that all files show the same ‘date added’.
But I ask you: is this really useful? Most likely, it is not.
Therefore, Plex has a special behaviour when a new library is scanned for the first time: It uses the file datetime stamp as the ‘added at’ time. That way it can at least try and mirror the timeframe when these files were added to your computer.

Well, then the wording is pretty unlucky.

Of course I’m interested in finding Music, which was ADDED before 3 days or a week or maybe some months ago.
This is important (to me), when I cannot remember the correct spelling of a Title/Album or forgot its name completely.
Then I want to look at the database and see what I have added in the last days/weeks/months, so I can find that Music quickly.

The intended behaviour, though, is also very nice, but it don’t helps me with my above problem.

Can you help me, what to click/do when I try to find music, which was ADDED before 3 days?

I don’t think, this is a special or uncommon intention to see what have been added in the last time. Especially, when on shared plex servers. Its like, when you’re here in the forum and want to know, what are the new threads to read.

As for a short example: Madsonic, Synology Audio Station, foobar2000, they all can sort for the date added to the database so maybe it will be possible to add a better wording and an additional option, so we could sort by “filedate” and by “added to the database”

This special case only applies when those files were added to the database while it was being created.
Any files you added after the date of the library creation should have the real date when they were added.
So in your case: which is older? The library or the file?

Thank you for explanation, but I’m not sure, I can follow, sorry.

Let me try to give some screenshots. Maybe I’m wrong with my assumption, or did not understand that “special case” alltoghether, or something is wrong.

The library scan is done automaticly at night. At this moment, no scantask is running.

This is an example of my music, which I copied to the media folder the yesterday:

The above seems ok to me.

But what about this:

We can see, that the filedate is not 2 years ago and the plex server is also not running since 2 years, so WHY the 2 years?

This is my sorting:

You may recognize the folderdate 08.08.1988 08:08 for the 100 Gassenhauer Album, I use such dates in explorer.exe to identify Music, which has been marked “OK and correctly tagged” by me.
But all the filedates are current.
Also, there are albums/files, which have a current date and shown as “N year old” in the medialibray.

So I’m not quite sure, what is happenig or what I have to do.

Is it possible that the server has a major issue with its real time clock?
Where does the year 1988 come from, on the album folder?
Do these files have an internal ‘date’ or ‘year’ meta tag?

I have edited my reply for the 1988 date while you’re answered.

The date-tags (set with foobar2000) are 2002.

I have attached a small mp3 file for further investigation. Please delete/remove it from this post, when checks are done.

How can I check this? Its my working computer, so I would see, if the date/time is wrong, I guess.
Its a Win7 64Bit with up to date hotfixes.

Thanks for the sample. It shows no errors.

Which type of library is this, btw?
When you created it, did you have to choose between ‘Premium’ and ‘last.fm’?

It might very well be that all of this will be obsolete in a few weeks, when the new music support is released (based on MusicBrainz). So I recommend not to invest too much time into fixing this beforehand.

So with the support of MB Plex will be able to “recognize” the music in my library? I’m curious.
I just tried the new Picard 2.2 and it looks promising.
Unfortunately I’m using DiscoGS mostly for my tagging and very less MB. But thats another story…

Good quesiton, I set up different PMS on different machines for testing purposes the last weeks/months, so I can’t 100% tell…

But I have seen that question, that I remember, and I’m pretty sure, I did not took the premium way, but use my own tags (or last.fm).

Those are my settings for the local library I see the “wrong” date-added-years:

Ok, you’re right not to spend too much time.

So, to sumarize (for me):

Its a strange/odd behaviour and we don’t know, where its coming from, but we can accept it and wait for a new update to happily enjoy new features (which hopefully let us forget about those glitches)

I’ll be back, when its not working in a “few weeks”

Thanks for your help/time!
