I am in the process to transferring the responsibility of running my Plex server from my desktop machine to my home server.
Setup:
I’m running a home server setup with Proxmox baremetal. Within Proxmox 8.22, I have two VMs: one running TrueNAS for media storage and the other running Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS. On the Ubuntu Server, I use Docker, which I manage through Portainer.
I’ve tried both linuxserver/plex and plexinc/pms-docker Docker images, running them in host network mode. Everything seems to work except for remote access.
Here’s what I’ve done so far to troubleshoot:
- Manually set the port to 32400 in Plex settings.
- Forwarded port 32400 in my Unifi router for the Ubuntu Server.
Despite these steps, remote access still fails. Checking the logs while attempting to establish remote access, I encountered the following log message:
[HttpClient/HCl#4f] HTTP error requesting GET https://<public_ip_of_server>.748989e170f44b3ea39b168b70383db2.plex.direct:32400/identity (60, SSL peer certificate or SSH remote key was not OK) (SSL: no alternative certificate subject name matches target host name ‘<public_ip_of_server>.748989e170f44b3ea39b168b70383db2.plex.direct’)
Both Proxmox and Ubuntu Server are essentially fresh installations and are running the latest versions.
Edit:
I had the idea that since I am running two servers on the same LAN with the same public-facing IP address (due to needing one functioning server for the kids), this might cause some issues. After shutting down the “old” server, the warning log mentioned above disappeared, but the overall issue remains.
In the Plex settings menu, it sometimes shows remote access as being available but quickly switches to being unavailable. However, testing with a remote device consistently shows the server as not being available.
After shutting down the old server, when trying to enable remote access, sometimes I get the following log message:
[HttpClient/HCl#8a] HTTP error requesting GET https://<public_ip_of_server>.748989e170f44b3ea39b168b70383db2.plex.direct:32400/identity (7, Couldn’t connect to server) (Failed to connect to <public_ip_of_server>.748989e170f44b3ea39b168b70383db2.plex.direct port 32400 after 311 ms: Couldn’t connect to server)
Any suggestions on what might be causing this issue or how to resolve it?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Edit 2:
It appears I managed to fix the issue. I had to disable the port forwarding rule on the router for the old server since it appears that with a single public IP address, it will cause issues to have two port forwarding rules active for the same port.
Hopefully, this post will help somebody else in the future!
