[SOLVED] Remote Access is up, but cannot play content (certificate issue?)

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: 8.11.0.22186 + other

Hi all,

I am able to connect to Plex remotely but nothing is able to be played. The issue seems to be tied to certificates or networking, though I am out of my depth here and unable to resolve on my own. Everything seems to be working fine on my local network.

Hoping to get some insight into what’s gone wrong in my Plex install. Issues have only cropped up recently, within the past 1 or 2 public updates.

Tried so far:

  • Checked/repaired database
  • Removed unnecessary Docker networks
  • Completely removed Plex container and files, pulled and launched a new container that claimed the server
  • Switched from Public to Latest server version channels
  • Checked for double-NAT issue
  • Reset network and DHCP
  • Checked port forwarding settings, switched to UPNP in Plex and router, switched back to manual port forwarding
  • Set preferred network device in Plex Server settings
  • Disabled IPv6 on Plex Server settings
  • Read through dozens of forum posts to no avail (here are a couple seemingly relevant to issues in my logs)
  • Probably some other minor things I’m forgetting

If you have any advice to offer it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to the Plex team and mods for reviewing these forums, too. There were many possible fixes I’ve come across, but nothing has done the trick as of yet.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to you all :santa:

I had been receiving warnings in my log for remote connections: “[CERT] TLS connection came in with unrecognized plex.direct SNI name…”.

For anyone curious as to a solution, I ended up just creating a new server altogether and copying over my database from the old server. This kept all user data and watch status, but meant that I needed to redownload all metadata and any users would need to re-pin the libraries to their home screen if they wanted to.

Not ideal, but it works fine again. I imagine the issue came from being issued an improper certificate for Plex authentication, though I can’t be sure.

I am getting the same issue and it started around Dec 26th. Same setup pretty much.
