Stand alone player

Hi guys,

I have just stumbled upon Plex after using XBMC for awhile.

Basically I have a server that can install the Plex Server.

And I use a custom built HTPC (Haswell) with OpenELEC.

I was wondering if there was a Plex install that I could just install instead of an addon ontop of OpenELEC?

Something similar, light weight and boots straight in.

Then connects to the Plex server?

Or is there a better way of doing this?

As far as I know, there is not a Plex variant of what you are referring to. What I would suggest in your case, is using the PlexBMC add on. It’s not perfect, but it works really well If you don’t want to install a host operating system.

I'm in the same boat as SavellM. Does the PlexBMC plugin just let normal XBMC use the Plex backend?

Pretty much. It supports most all functions that a true Plex client does, including MyPlex Queue and Remote streaming. One that is currently missing however is now playing support. But that is kind of a minor thing. It is also being updated fairly regularly.

I ran it as my primary client for a few months while I was having problems with Plex, and was pretty happy with it. I still run it on my Raspberry Pi, because I found RaspBMC to be much more stable than the Raspberry Pi Plex build.
