Start up problems plexconnect - OpenPLEX / trailers not available

Hi guys,

First post here. I hope I followed all the rules correctly. Have been browsing around here for half a day trying to solve the problem myself, but no luck so far.

Firmware: ATV3 | 7.0.2 (6915)

DNS Set on Apple TV: 192.168.178.17

IP of PlexConnect: 192.168.178.17

PlexConnect Server Info: OSX 10.10 Yosemite

PMS Info: OSX 10.10 Yosemite

PMS Version: 0.9.11.4

PMS IP: 192.168.178.17 (?) (same device as plex connect)

PlexConnect Version: 0.5-dev (used openplex to install)

Contents of settings.cfg

Problem: I followed all steps of the openplex app (tried several times now), and updated all software to latest versions as of 22dec14  1000Z (PMS, PlexConnect, ATV3), but keep getting 'trailer unavailable. try again later' immediately after trying to open the trailers app.

PMS works fine, both locally and externally on several IOS devices and macbook (for months).

I added the profile on the ATV3 using 'http://trailers.apple.com/trailers.cer' as '192.168.178.17/trailers.cer' as stated in the openplex app gets stuck at 'adding profile'.

For some reason my ip_plexconnect = 0.0.0.0, and ip_pms = 192.168.178.10 (should this not be .17 as the PMS is installed on the same device as the plex connect?). Not sure how/if I can/should edit this?

Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Pretty new to all this, so I am sure it's just some elite noob mistake somewhere.

Thanks in advance!

For some reason my ip_plexconnect = 0.0.0.0, and ip_pms = 192.168.178.10

These are the defaults but not referenced because of these entries in settings.cfg are set to true so Plexconnect uses the values it gathers on run.
enable_plexgdm = True
enable_plexconnect_autodetect = True

I can't access the link to your log file to see if I can see any issues.

Thanks for your help. This is a copy-paste in this case. I'm sorry for pasting logfiles, but in this case it is a rather short one. hope that's ok

You should be leaving all the settings in settings.cfg as default typically as drewbie pointed out. Also when you send trailers.cer you need to use the ipadress/trailer.cer cert url button provided with the app. I would start over by choosing a new theme and picking your desired hijack/cert then deleting any old certs on your aTV (if they exist under profiles) then loading the new ones since when you choose a new theme it will delete your old certs on your mac. I assume you set your aTV DNS to your mac IP. Once you successfully load your certs onto your aTV reboot your aTV then try the hijack. If it works goto the advanced tab and backup your certs then goto the extra tab and enable the auto cert/hijack loader so you won't need to load certs again for 10 years, it will load your certs and set your hijack automatically on your mac for you using any theme.

I assume you are using the latest app revision of 0.4? Always download the latest app using the OpenPlex installer otherwise since 0.4 the in-app updater should work again.

If the above doesn't work do you have any VPN or any antivirus that could be blocking PlexConnect?

Hi Wahlman, first of all thanks for taking the time to help. And good work on openplex! I love your work.

I will give your advise a go tomorrow when I am back home. I did try the ipadress/trailers.cer (using the app) initially, but that didn’t work (got stuck at ‘updating profile’ or something along those lines). I haven’t tried a new theme yet, so I will try that tomorrow.

I will also check that I run the latest version of openplex (although I’m pretty sure I already checked this yesterday)

Today I did a full factory reset of one of the aTV3’s in the house, and updated to 7.0.2, so essentially I already deleted the old certificates and loaded new ones using ipadress/trailers.cer, and when the aTV wouldnt take it, tried http://trailers.apple.com/trailers.cer.

Regarding your note about vpn, I do have osx server running from this mac, but it is not running on a vpn itself

Wahlman, I followed your steps today, and plex is working on the aTV3 now! Thanks again. Looking back, I followed all the right steps (as quite clearly explained in openPlex), so the main problem solver must have been changing the theme and generating new certificates.

Just 2 small follow up questions.

1) Can I now change back the theme to the original iBAA without messing things up again? (just pressing 'install' behind iBAA?)

2) Are there any known issues with the back up? As per your advise, I pressed the 'certs' button in the back up line in openPlex (a unix file plexconnect_BACKUP was created in the application folder), but when I then press auto load certs & hijacks in extras, I get a notification 'back up certs first, then enable auto certs loader...'. After this I tried 'all' in advanced -> back ups, got the notification 'all settings backed up', then tried to enable the auto load again, but got the same 'back up certs first ..... ' message.

PS. I am running version 0.4 of openPlex

Update to the lastest version of OpenPlex first using the in-app updater.

1. You should be able to use iBaa. you can also use/test other themes if you install CLT first then PIL/Pillow.

2. Not that I know of. Click Backup all settings then Click backup certs again and make sure they are indeed in the plexconnect_BACKUP folder. If they are Click enable auto hijack/cert loader then click ibaa theme install button and you should be all set.

I run openPlex version 0.4, it says 'no app updates available'

And the issue regarding back ups may be that I no longer seem to have the backup folder, it is now just the single plexconnect_BACKUP unix file directly in the applications folder. Can I manually (re)create the folder and copy the certificates in there somehow?

Delete the File. Then click install baa and see if it fixes it.

Then try the other step I outlined above, or create the folder manually if it doesn't work:

plexconnect_BACKUP

Installed iBaa and everything started going nuts again. However, back to the Falco953 theme now, which works fine.

Also managed to get the backup / auto load working by manually creating plexconnect_BACKUP folder and dragging the unix file in there.

I think I will leave things as they are now, except from the iBaa theme everything seems to be working. Time for christmas stuff now ;)

Here is how to go back to iBaa 0.5 stable since you use OpenPlex. Just make sure you have auto updates disabled in the advanced tab. Paste this one liner into a terminal:

stopbash.bash; cd /Applications/PlexConnect; sudo git reset --hard f1f3a93f3a4c1aac4a5b8c13f36b8c4442e1b255; restartbash.bash; echo 'Exit your hijacked app on your aTV and reopen it to complete the downgrade ;-)'; git reset --hard

>>Installed iBaa and everything started going nuts again

Is there anything more specific to that?

Yea ok sorry, bit unspecific. I meant it basically put me back to square one, trailers not available, see topic start.

I am sure it is something simple, and I will trouble shoot further next week, as it is still my preferred theme, and I have used it without any problems in the past. Just happy I got things up and running now again on my new set up with the help above.
