Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

Thanks for sharing this, I will stop as well. However, better communication on their end would go a long way toward quelling the frustrations of this user group.

I agree. The lack of communication has opened up rumors and speculation. It has also weakened the confidence of consumers. I’m not totally giving up on Plex. Emby has been a satisfactory solution to the problems we’ve been experiencing with Plex DVR and Live TV.

I love the “hard to reproduce” part.

Who here believes that :)

Yeah, I was surprised to see that statement as well. Maybe they should share their setup. Am I doing something wrong?

LOL!!! Now that’s funny.

I doubt that anyone is doing anything wrong. On the other hand, I just started a recording remotely from the web, waited about 5 minutes and selected that program from my iPhone (remotely). I was prompted with watch from beginning or watch live. I selected “watch from beginning” and it worked just fine; I’m still watching, past the point of where the recording began. No issues – so no idea why this worked for me and so many folks are having issues :frowning:

For those that are experiencing this, does it happen every time, most of the time, or occasionally?

Try a couple time shifts (forward and back) and report back. Bet you’ll see it not working.

Also, try a more mainstream use case like a ROKU connected to a TV on a local network.

Sure, I can try all those things (well, I don’t have a Roku) – but that doesn’t answer my question…

Fails Everytime. Using HD homerun with Nvidia shield front end, same on Android phones. Timeshifting workwd fine the other day on a PC using plex software, but I retired my HTPCs a long time ago so this isn’t a viable solution for me.

For me, this has often worked how you describe if I do no time shifting. The issue for me is if I wait more like 20+ min to start (starts from live) or try to time shift (skip through commercials). Then it will not work like it should.

“All those things”???

Try a main stream device and try time shifting is “All those things”??? I now understand why there’s been trouble reproducing this at PLEX. What streaming devices do you have? Can you post your logs?

I have the same behavior, when it passes more than 10min, it never goes to the beginning. In other words, you need to wait more than 5min. I cannot start from the beginning if the show is started more than 10min. I am using Nvidia shield as player and hdhomerun. Using the .grab file works for me, though. I can rewind and forward and start from the beginning without problem.

I’ve tried in the FireTV stick, my phone android and web player, same behavior. It doesn’t start from the beginning if there is more than 10min from the show started.

You’ve made an incorrect assumption there. The devices that I have, etc, have NOTHING to do with Plex’s developers ability to track down issues. I’m not a Plex employee or developer.

My experience has been a bit less consistent; it does not fail every time. Last Monday I was able to select “Watch from the beginning” after a 2-hour show had been recording for a while. Tried it agains this past Monday with the same exact show, and it failed. I’ve had it work something like 20 minutes into a 30-minute show, but sometimes it doesn’t work a few minutes into the show.

I haven’t done much experimenting with time shifting around or watching shows for a while after I’ve selected “Watch from the beginning,” so take my experience with a grain of salt.

For me, it is everyday. I record PBS Newshour because I’ve arrived home at the same hour that the show starts. Then, I’ve tried every day and it goes directly to the live emission. Then, I finish watching from the .grab folder. But, it worked for week in April of this year.

Do you have any other clients to test with? That makes a difference

Android TV (Sony TV or NV Shield)
Watch from start

1st FF click works. 2nd FF click progress bar go to end and video locks up
I can reproduce this 100% of the time. Impossible for it not to happen

Win10 PMP
Every FF click starts video from beginning
Also happens 100% of time.

PMS is Win10 with Hauppauge USB tuner

This feature worked perfectly last year through the NFL season. Totally unusable now

I experience problems with watching in progress recordings on every client I use. Nvidia Shield (both the 2015 and current model), any Android app (Samsung S8+, Pixel 3XL, Pixel C tablet, and Samsung S4 tablet), and from my Windows client both local and remote. I have tried setting up my server on a FreeNas Mini, different Windows 10 PCs, and a Netgear 312 NAS. It is worse when the program has been recording longer and I try to join. If I am lucky I’ll get to watch the program from the live position but it fails when trying to time shift. The Live TV constant locks up when I am watching a show and try to select another program from the ones displayed as on now. We have two 3 tuner HDHomerun Primes. All devices, except the phones and tablets, are hardwired Ethernet. Using the exact same setup, minus Plex, all is working spectacularly on Emby Live TV/DVR and as good as can be expected on the HDHomerun DVR.
