Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

Yes, as long as you have good bandwidth at the NY location, you can stream Channels DVR Live TV content remotely from anywhere. So in NY, you would need the HDHOMERUN Prime and a machine (windows/linux/android) running Channels DVR. Then you can control everything from Missouri.

Thanks for confirming. New York is setup with Verizon FIOS 1GB service (but we never see quite that speed) and that is for both up and download. In reality we usually get around 800 mbps.

I have a Windows 10 machine there that is my Plex Media Server there. It has an Intel Core i7-770 CPU @ 3.60GHz and 16 GBs of RAM with 512 GB SSD for OS and 6GB HD for media storage. I also use MCE Buddy to run re-encode the video to MP4 which also runs ComSkip to remove commercials during that process.

I suppose that I can have Channels DVR & Plex running on the same box?

Dude… Just move on… Plex is NOT for you… clearly!

Yes, they can run on the same box.

On my Apple Tv devices, when watching a show while its being recorded, I get bumped back to the show page every 3-4 min. Anyone else have this?

Some of us have paid for the lifetime plex pass so we want to not throw that money away over a function that is basically standard in all other dvrs

I have started following this thread a few days ago because the issue was plaguing me as well.

It seems that for me, the issue has now been resolved. The reason that I say this, is that last night (September 19, 2019) I had the Thursday Night NFL game scheduled to record.

I waited until the game was almost over, went to the man cave, turned on my projector, nvidia shield and audio/video receiver. I started the Plex app on the nVidia Shield and browsed the guide and found the NFL game. I selected the game and was asked if I wanted to start from the beginning or watch it live. I started watching the game from the beginning and it did this without any problems. I was also able to fast forward past commercials and even do a rewind when I went too far.

I will continue to test these DVR features which every one knows are basic DVR features that should just work.

My setup that appears to be working now for the issues discussed in this thread is…

Plex Media Server version 1.17.0.1709 running on Windows 10 Professional workstation with a HDHomeRun Prime being used for the DVR.

The client is Plex for Android (TV) version 7.21.0.12323 running on nVidia Shield

I still have to test the following clients to see if this issue is resolved on them as well

LG TV model OLED65C6P-U with Plex for LG version 4.5.1 - Tested and is working
LG TV model 50UK6500AUA with Plex for LG version 4.5.1 - Not tested yet
55" Hitachi Roku TV with Plex for Roku version 6.3.14.5837-3b3ccb8ae-Plex - Not tested yet
Samsung Galaxy S10+ with Plex for Android (Mobile) version 7.21.0.12323 - Tested and is working
FireTV 4K - Tested and is working

And I still want to test the two clients that you don’t want or like to hear about…

Plex for Windows version 1.3.1.916-1cb2c34d - Tested and is working
Plex Media Player version 2.42.0.1013 - Testing and is working

I will update this post once I have tested all of these other clients out.

But, at least for now and for me, this issue appears to have been resolved by Plex.

I have my fair share of frustrations with bugs in basic functionality…but running PMS 1.16.6.1592 on an nVidia Shield, I have watching recordings in progress now working well with Android TV Plex client 7.21.0.12323 and LG TV Plex client 4.7.1. Those versions have been released for a while now. I sounds like possibly not all the server/client combinations are fixed…but your statements are hyperbole. They have made progress…finally…it should have happened over a year ago though.

Still 100% no progress on ATV4K or ROKU platforms using the PLEX app. Try to do multiple time shifts and/or restarts. It will fail 100% of the time. Good try though. PLEX marketing is still alive… My statement is no hyperbole. It is 100% accurate.

Maybe one of y’all should post a video of how well it’s working for you??? It would be good to see.

Completely agree. Progress has been made.

Gross exaggeration indeed.

@adutchman! thanks for posting your update!

I haven’t been able to watch live TV from the start of a recording in ages. It stuffed up on my Sony Android TV awhile back, and my new LG C9 OLED didn’t seem to allow me to even select the option “Watch from beginning”.

I don’t normally have my Plex server set to get Beta updates, but after your post i enabled this to get 1.17.0.1709 and BAM "watch from beginning of recording is finally working again!

YAY!

I’ve upgraded to this version also and whilst it is better then previous it seems hit and miss still.

What i’m finding is if recording hasn’t been going for very long then it mostly doesn’t work. If the recording has been going for quite some time (30+ minutes) then yes it is now working.

Playing a bit further we’ve found that if we go to “watch from live” plex has crashed a couple of times. it does seem like some improvements are there, but not quite all the way.

I posted this in the EPG thread, and it seems to fit here also.

Suggestion: Hire a company like Channels DVR and contract out the entire DVR/timeshifting debacle to a company that specializes in it. This is not working. I have bad listings, I have timeshifting that doesn’t work, and PAID for these things.

Please give me what I paid for.

Amen! I’ve been using Channels DVR for just about a month now and it’s what a DVR should be. I love it and have confidence in it.

I joined the Country Music series being broadcast by PBS last evening an hour or more into it. Absolute fail on PLEX (switched to other source). I couldn’t move about at all. It’s just random failures regardless of the start time, at least on the ATV4K and the newest ROKUs. Another partner might be TitanTV to get the guide fixed as well

I was with DirecTV for 22 years before leaving for this mess and YTTV. BOTH Direct and YTTV have great DVR capabilities and this mess sticks out like a sore thumb!

NEWS FLASH - if this remained an open source project and free then it is acceptable to proceed as “your users are also your testers”. Once you switch your paradigm to closed source you now own the product and own the problems. Sorry, make all the excises you want and applaud all the “progress” you want but if the product fails repeatedly your product is not viable. You can’t have it both ways and most have realized that.

That is a fantastic idea. I will make some recordings of my setup working very soon.

I was with DirecTV for 19 years and trust me, they have had their fair share of problems. I remember times with DirecTV’s guide data was not working correctly and recording failed. Or the guide data for my local OTA broadcasts stopped showing up in the guide. Or when programs just didn’t record period. Oh, and then calling in for DirecTV support, how you had to go through that stupid automated system of the steps to restart your receiver and then having to wait like 20 minutes for the box to reboot. And I was paying them over $120 per month and took that crap because I didn’t have any other options at the time. Now there are other options.

My divorce with DirecTV was finalized almost 2 years ago and I have never been happier. They keep begging to have me back, but I would rather keep my hard earned money in my pocket.

I got a lifetime Plex Pass when they had a special sale for $129.00, which was even before they had DVR capabilities. Have there been growing pains? Absolutely! Have I experienced issues with the software, most definitely. At times it was quite frustrating, but many of the problems that I encountered have been fixed.

Do I moan and groan about them on their forums? Heck no, what good comes from that. It certainly will not make the problem go away. Looking over all the posts put here by you, @Smokindog it seems pretty obvious and clear that PLEX is not for you.

I agree, this issue has been going on for too long, but there is progress being made, because, at least for me, it is now working. (I will record some videos for you, @Smokindog)

Using Plex Media Player embedded 2.42 on a PI 3 with PMS 1.17 running an Ubuntu Server 18.04.3 I’ve had positive results with time shifting.

My wife and I watched This is Us on Tuesday night and a few other shows without any issues. Now we are watching Thursday Night Football and everything is working as expected. Thank you for all of the work in getting this to work for Fall Premieres and the start of the football season.

OK, football season is well under way and basically zero has been done to fix timeshifting for my hdwe. I’d feel better if a dev checked in periodically to see how things are not progressing here.

No discernable improvement

back in August, I posted about my issues with plex dvr/live TV and my move to the channels dvr product.

status update

with the latest update of Plex media server for my Qnap, I tested this again
had the same issues with time shifting and transport, no discernable improvement. CPU utilization on the Nas was also high typically 50% or higher while recording a single show

been using channels dvr since August and its been flawless. use it every day
the server works great on my intel based qnap nas, CPU utilization runs about 25 % while fast forwarding , 10% otherwise

I had been planning on using a dedicated pc for dvr, but it works great on a Nas.
