Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

This issue is getting no attention at Plex. I tweeted a link to @plex
Let’s hope that gets some attention.

I have the exact same problem with Hauppauge tuner. Start from beginning did work before an update a bit back. Now it only starts live or 10 minutes earlier. I bought a lifetime pass because of the DVR. My spouse is also irate. Please, we just want this fixed. Let’s face it, Windows Media Center could do this all those years ago and my main reason for Plex is a Media Center replacement.

It’s sad to see they’re still promoting DVR functionality on Twitter, Facebook, etc. I’d be embarrassed to advertise a feature with such basic functionality being broken.

I have to add my two cents worth and agree with 75ronald_gmail_com, I bought the lifetime pass just for the DVR functionality and to hopefully replace my Windows Media Center setup that ran perfectly for 8+ years, so far I’m disappointed. The shows I schedule to record do record as they should, but the rest of the other DVR functionality that a person expects just isn’t there. Since this is a paid feature of Plex I would hope they are concentrating on it as a high priority.

Edit: Now the one thing I thought the DVR did well is broken too. No guide data for the past few days so that makes the DVR/Live TV useless. I was once so happy with Plex and told everyone about it, now I’m just plain disappointed. I could go on but why? It sure seems like no one at Plex is listening.

From web player, it works without problem. But, if I try from the player installed in my Nvidia shield, I get live tv. I cannot start from the beginning. Then, I imagine that it is not server problem, but player. Couple months ago, it was working without problem, though. I am wondering if Plex cannot reproduce the issue. Because, it seems really important to be broken in this way.

Plex Media Server Version 1.15.6.1079
The web player doesn’t work for me. It sometimes works if the program is short & you ask Live TV to start from the beginning after about 15 minutes. Any longer and it picks some random spot to start from. A forward or rewind brings the program back to that same random spot.

ok, i’ve come up with a work around which my wife isn’t to “unhappy” about, defiantly still not happy.

in my docker i added another volume for the .grab directory ( the directory plex temperately stores the video while recording ) called RecordingInProgress then i create another library in plex pointing to this directory.

the video while in this directory has just a unique id as a name but seeing as i only have 4 tuners its a max of only 4 files in this directory at a time .

Dont know if this is going to have any unintended side effects, guess time will tell.

I’ll also give that a try… thanks 0402dave

cplex-at-home, I’ve repeated my tests with web player and you are right. It only works with small files.

I don’t chime in much, but yes, this is a big issue. Besides posting here, is there something that can be done to help alleviate this problem?

Some of you have mentioned trying Emby as an alternative. However, it seems that Emby may have the same problem that doesn’t allow a user to watch a program from the beginning while it is being recorded. Do any of you use Emby? If so, can you check to see if the same issue happens with Emby?

I tried Emby today. You can watch recordings while they are being recorded without any problems. Stop, pause, rewind, fast forward, restart from the same point that you stopped watching, etc., everything worked much like it did/does with windows media center. The Emby user interface seems to be more intuitive and the guide is better and more accessible than it is in PMS. I also tested remote viewing and casting to TV from my mobile device. Everything worked. The only thing I could find that didn’t work the same as plex (or better), is that Emby is unable to remove commercials as a standard setting. If you don’t need that, I think Emby is a good alternative to PMS. I hope that the Plex team can get the software up to speed with it’s competitors because many of us have paid the lifetime license fee…

Is there anyone from Plex even looking at this topic?

Some feedback as to whether this issue is even on plex’s radar would be great.

Yes, several of us are.

thanks, any idea on when it will be fixed?

FYI, if I restart PMS, I can manually return to the beginning of an in-progress recording, but don’t receive a prompt with that option.

If you restart the server while recording, doesn’t it interrupt the recording?

Yes, of course. But after the restart, I can beginning subsequent recordings that are in progress.

Seems like yesterday’s server update fixed it for me, but, I thought this a few weeks ago too and it turned out to be an isolated incident where it worked once.

Windows server here, just updated to 1.15.6.1079.

Yup, isolated incident. Still broke.

But, last 2 server updates in Windows, the first thing I test is this issue, and it has worked the first time after the update, then not again. Perhaps that’s a clue?
