Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

It’s actually been going on longer than July '18 but that’s still not the most alarming part. It’s obvious to me that they haven’t even worked to duplicate such an easy to duplicate issue ON THEIR OWN. There should be no need for logs here, it’s not a one off issue. Everything to do with DVR/time shifting/delayed viewing with respect to shows currently being recorded is broken and on multiple platforms. I can and have confirmed it on ROKU Stick/Stick+/Ultra on both 9.0 and 9.1 as well as ATV. Happens on every available client for those devices and the most current server running on Windows.

Still not working but the good news is that there are solutions that do work.

I have one user in the house that still prefers PLEX and I own a PLEX Pass so I want to see it fixed but I have very low expectations.

I installed Emby last week and have been quite happy with it so far. I ran into an issue with the Roku app where streaming a live channel would quit all of a sudden and not restart. After trying different settings to get it to work I finally contacted Emby through the community forums Friday night around 9:30 pm, they replied that night to my situation. The next morning I sent them log files and two people jumped in on the issue and Saturday afternoon they had a fix that will be in the next beta. I haven’t seen the new beta yet, but they said it would be very soon, so time will tell.
With Emby, if you want a secure remote connection you have to setup your own domain and SSL, but after doing some research it wasn’t that difficult, that’s the only thing I missed about Plex so far.

I jumped in to fully replace my DVR with Plex a few months ago and this bug has made it a miserable experience for the family. I hope it’s fixed soon.

I bought my Plex pass when they announced the DVR option. However, because of this I never moved to it and rarely use it because it has never worked that great. I actually don’t watch much live other than football and when that was on (last year) it was still not working. Sticking with my HDHomerun app for the time being.

Okay, so “start from beginning” has worked for me most of the time I’ve tried it–that is on a normal recording, with normal defaults. Where it has never worked, and has seemed to be impossible, is for me to even start a recording in sports events where I have ticked “add an extra hour”. There seems to be no way to start the show during that extra hour, which is not very pleasing.

@sa2000, @anon18523487 - I noticed a new Beta release today ( Version 1.15.8.1198). Has this issue been fixed?

Well, It’s worked correctly for me twice in a row now, could it be fixed?

Slow recording season for me, so I only record the NBC Nightly News lately, so, I’ll setup and make a few tests.

I’m calling this fixed for now on my end. Anyone else?

[edit] Well it worked fine last night from my Roku (I’ve assumed this was a server issue). Just tested from the server box using Chrome Plex interface, still broke. WTF?

Definitely not fixed on my end

Still broke in ALL the same ways it has been for more than a year.

It doesn’t work with long recorded programs. Record a 2 hr program & try to start watching from the beginning 90 minutes into the program. Just doesn’t work. I’ve given them logs twice now. No response. Plex should be testing this scenario with even longer programs.

Doesn’t work with short programs either, it’s a bit of a joke to be honest. Its so bad that it’s been broken for over a year and it seems like they are doing absolutely nothing about it!

+1. I put an enhancement post for the issue with not being able to start watching when in extra time. On the plus side for me, as long as I’m not in extra time, I don’t have problems watching a recording that is in process and can start from the beginning. Possibly this is a problem with certain combinations of server/client. I’m Linux for PMS and a Roku client.

Thanks for the logs from the roku and the plex media server. The issue as you decribe appears to be to do with offset values when starting to watch live tv of a recording that is in progress.

I am not sure at this stage if it is to do with back-to-back recordings or not. On channel v4.1, you had a recording starting at 6am

CBS4 This Morning - 6A (2017) - 2019-06-03 06 00 00 - Episode 06-03

and then the one you mentioned, starting immediately after at 7am

CBS This Morning (2012) - S2019E110 - Episode 110

I am referring the roku app and server logs to the development team.

Does the problem also arise when there isn;t back to back recordings ?

“I attempted to start watching the CBS This Morning show that started recording at 7:00am. I was given the option to start watching from the beginning, but when selected, it started from some arbitrary spot.
I then fast forwarded the program. On the screen it shows the bar & the position advancing, but it starts playing at exactly the same arbitrary spot as before. I then rewound with the same result.”

I get the exact same behavior when there is just one recording.

I never record back to back programs, it randomly works 5% of the time, does as described above the other 95% of the time.

I have got another set of logs to look at and will see if there is a back to back recording

You say it works 5% of the time - well if the offset is wrong i would expect it to be wrong every time. Unless you are referring to doing seeks and sometimes that works and sometimes it does not

I would like to see logs from client and server where there is not back-to-back recordings and watch from start goes to random position. Lets keep seeking out of this for now and concentrate on just watch from start

It happens with or without back to back recordings.

The Tonys on CBS were a mess tonight. Plex buffered and then skipped ahead to the live broadcast. Watching on most current PMS and Samsung app. The recording immediately followed the recording of 60 Minutes on CBS with a 45 minute ending pad.

Logs upon Request.

Had a group of friends over to watch the NBA finals the other night ‘No problem, I have a DVR, we can start the game on delay’.
1 Hour in, I hit ‘Watch form start 65 mins ago’ and it starts from live. Very embarrassing and frustrating.
