Step up the game for the music category // mod: support for release date/year per track

  1. allow for a release year per track, not just per album. For example: the album The Best Of KC & The Sunshine Band came out in 1996. The music is from the 70s/80s, but due to the release year of the CD, it will be popping up in the Decade Radio for the 90s.

  2. allow for multiple artists per album and per track. Currently, for browsing purposes, one must decide on one artist per album or have a custom artist or dump it all in “Various Artists”. For albums this may be easy, but less for compilations and singles. Plenty of artists do collaborations and only choosing one will make browsing less optimal. Same for the actual track artists: Christina Aguilera ft. Missy Elliot - Car Wash, it would be nice to list both singers separately instead of as “Christina Aguilera ft. Missy Elliot” so that the track may be listed under Christina Aguilera as well as under Missy Elliot. [mod-edit: duplicate]

That brings me to:
3) Browsing by artist only shows Album Artist. It would be great to lose this approach and browse by track artists. [mod-edit: duplicate]

Not sure about #1, but there are existing feature request threads for your second and third items. You should do a quick search and add your votes there.

Maybe so, but there is no way to vote if Plex doesn’t give sufficient voting power. I couldn’t even vote for my own thread, as suggested when opening a feature request. How else to voice my opinion?

(And: no, I haven’t been voting like crazy. Just my other feature request I’ve opened today, before that it’s been months since I’ve voted for anything.)

I agree completely on the voting limitation.

It’s better to add your comments in the existing threads, even if you don’t have a vote to give. When others come to add their votes for this issue, votes can get split over multiple threads, lessening their impact.

Early 2021 clean-up:
given the overlap with existing suggestions I’ve edited the OP and thread title to focus on the 1 feature for which there’s no existing/duplicate suggestion

I would like this option too. Digitized all our CD’s and vinyl media and would like to sort on track date, not album date!
A lot of albums contains (remastered) releases of old songs and using the album date doesn’t make sense. All my tracks have the original date available in the tags.

Totally agree.
Greatest hits, remastered releases, etc. all make a mess of song release dates.

Yes Please, Track original release dates for compilation and Reissue Albums is a must have for music organisation and decade radios

Yes please add my vote for this as well.

You’ve got my vote too !

Ive been looking for an app with this feature for a long time. Compilation albums of old songs show up with the album release date and it would be more appropriate to use the song release date.

As someone who wants to update my many playlists, it would be very helpful to add a field in the General Tab for a song/track for the YEAR of the song. For Movies and the General tab, there’s a field for Originally Available, so there should similarly be one for song tracks. (It would also be most helpful to add the Year of a movie as well).

Once the Year has been entered on a track, then you could filter by a Genre for example - such as Classic Rock - and then have the ability to sort by Rating or Year along with the other existing columns such as Album Artist, Album, Duration and Plays. Sorting by Year after selecting a Genre would allow making playlists much easier.

And if were possible, it would be nice to be able to have a dual-sort option so that you could:

Sort by Rating (high-to-low for example) and then have a secondary sort for Year.

Perhaps this is an alternate feature request, but it would be nice to be able to merge Genres. For example, Classic Rock is a genre, but there are multiple Classic Rock genres in my library. Being able to merge genres also might lean to something such as “Classic Rock” and then “Alternative” which could then be shown in the display.

Thank you for your consideration.
