So I have a unique situation where I am looking to see if this is Possible. …
Is it possible to Stream in to Plex just to stream back out. For example. Say I am hosting a party at my house and I want to let my family see it. Is there a way to send my video feed into Plex and my family in another state who use my plex be able to choose it like a movie and stream it… Not sure If I am conveying what I am looking for but essentialy is there a way to live stream to plex and play back live from plex on remote devices. I would assume similar to the LIVE TV option if it were available Remote.
I do not think that Plex can do that but there nay be a way that I do not know of.
It seems to me that an app like Skype might be better for what you are trying to do bout of course Skype is limited in the clients it runs on but I think most computers and many, maybe most, Android devices meet Skype’s needs.
I have thought of these options but its not just for a Camera. I would like to stream my gaming to my plex channel similar to how you would stream to twitch. I know there are options out there for gaming but If I can stream a camera or game play then it opens the ability to stream other things…I was really just looking for a way to live stream anything from cameras to game play to anything I can put into my ELGATO to plex so what ever I feed in, everyone can watch. Would be a cool feature if unavailable. I know there are other means out there but I want to stay within plex if possible.
I know it’s not ultimately the answer you’re looking for but YouTube and Facebook both support live streaming for free and is easily setup - if you compare with actually getting Plex to do this.
Both can create streams that are only available to friends or with a specific link that you’d need to email to them.
Keep in mind that if you want to keep the recording of the live stream (that will happen automatically) you’re limited to 4 hours before you’d need to restart the stream (this is because it automatically creates a recording of the live stream which can’t be longer than 4 hours)
I think both also let you have unlimited times for live streams if you’re not recording.
Free way to get set up is to download OBS (https://obsproject.com/) and goto the Live Dashboard (www.youtube.com/live_dashboard) in your YouTube account to get the stream key you’ll need to put into the OBS settings.
Plenty of tutorials out there to get you started if you’re looking to do something a little better than just a skype call.
I had thought of facebook and youtube originally but they are pretty strict on what you can and can’t stream overly sensor Music and video content and im not looking to have that done. Thats why I was trying to keep it with in my control and not monitored by another company and have to abide by their guidelines.
If there was some way to co-opt the live tv/dvr functionality, you could fake plex into taking an arbitrary video input stream and sending it out to a fake tv channel.
Or if you don’t need perfect live streaming, you could set your video to record in 1-3 minute segments, saved to a plex ‘video’ (not tv or movie) library with auto-rescan enabled for file changes.
This should cause your plex server to pick up the video segments, which your viewers would need to play as the server scans and makes them available.
so here is a question that kind of goes along with this. Is it possible to use like a Homerun HD Prime that uses a cable card to send feed into for the live tv? I’d like to be able to watch my tv channels through plex while away from home. Anyone know if that is possible? or does live tv only work for over the air channels

I don’t know if it’s been tested, but in theory, if you had a camera that could broadcast into the cable card as a channel, like the way old VCR’s use to send to channel 3, you could probably watch that live.
