I am a complete newbie when it comes to both NAS and Plex, so please bear with me!
I recently installed Plex on a brand-new DS713+ running DSM 5.0. Up until now, I have been using iTunes on Windows to stream music stored on my Windows PC hard drive to an Apple Airport Express, which is attached to my old-school home stereo system (DAC, amp, speakers). I moved my iTunes music library over to the DS713+ and indexed it with Plex. That worked really well! Now I want to stream music from the Plex server to my Airport Express.
The Plex/Web client on Windows does not seem to offer any option for streaming to clients other than Windows itself. The Plex Android app sees a Chromecast device on my network, but not the Airport Express. Is it hopeless? Or is there a way to get Plex to see my Airport Express?
Also Interested - I have the same symptoms but need the cure now - this should be pretty easy to figure out - right ? please let me know what I can do to make this work -
I use an iPhone which uses apple airplay which Plex interacts with, so I am able to play Plex through my music gear. That said, I have to lock the phone screen and only on the lock screen is the icon available to stream via Airplay - it’s not available anywhere in the Plex mobile app on the phone. Not sure if this helps though as Android is probably completely different.
[Edit] Just noticed this is a resurected topic, but martianable might still care.
Hey jisner,
No, you can’t steam directly out of Plex to AirPlay/AirTunes. Plex can stream (fling in Plex speak) to other Plex clients if the “Remote player” option is enabled on that client. And Plex can stream to a chrome cast.
If you have the Plex client on an iOS device you can ask iOS to push the audio to an AirPlay device, but it will be your Phone/iPad/whatever doing the playback, and your battery will suffer.
