PAL’s 480 IS 576 - DVD-Video - Wikipedia and DVDs expressly made for PAL’s regions at 50Hz can contain video streams at 720x576. Plex will correctly report this as 576p. Plex will also provide a bogus report for DVDs encoded with a forced, hacked, jimmied, hammered and jacked up resolution of 854x480 as 576 'cause @leelynds confused it (LOL).
In these international times we live in a proper 720x576 encoding is increasingly rare, but still quite valid. Handbrake will work within these environments, but instead of 854 in the Max Width area you would put 1024 - 1024x576=16:9… easy.

Yes, 576 is almost 100 p better than 480 as any idiot can see, but it’s very likely that 576 is just a jacked up version of 480p original material unless the contents therein were produced and manufactured on PAL soil.

This is very likely true for older tv shows. But if a show was already produced in HD, then the producers of the PAL DVD are using this HD source to create a version scaled down to 576 lines. which then really has the visual advantage over 480 lines material.

I’ll agree with that. I’m a registered, card carrying idiot and know that 576 is a bigger number than 480. I doubt I’ll make a special trip to Amazon UK and order up a PAL TV and a bunch of PAL DVDs and Blu Rays though - only an idiot without a card would do that.
Besides everything ‘good’ on UK TV is on PBS over here and that magnum 1080i PBS signal comes rolling down in this valley from it’s perch atop Hog Nuts Mountain 3 miles from here - and looks ‘Fabulous, Darling’… Absolutely Fabulous The Movie (2016).

Thankyou JuiceWSA. I have trawled the internet on how to encode 4:3 to 16:9. Tried so many other programs and none of them worked. Just change the width in handbrake to 854 so simple. I can finally start encoding my old tv shows.
Samples below.

I wouldn’t encode them if plex for roku had a OPTIONAL stretch/zoom function. I love plex but this feature is needed asap. Please devs.
