Subtitle Transcode Issues

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7998
Player Version#: 10.10.0.5899

Hey, so im using plex on android TV and been having issues with subtitles and transcoding. My Server is ran on a Terramaster NAS so CPU isnt the most powerful. I’ve been tinkering with file formats in case that is the issue, that being switching from HVEC to H264 exclusively.

I will add, AAS subtitles did work for a time then suddenly caused issues. I’ve done the usual changes on the player such as “only burn advanced format subs”. Now I did come across an interesting thing, playing the video without subtitles first caused this :

This is to be expected, when then turning subtitles back on, it played without transcode and the subtitles worked!

Then I tried replaying the video, with subs on by default and get the following:

Turning the subs off with the video playing, which was transcoding has this output:

Then reenabling the subs with the video playing still:

So to me, it seems just turning subs “off and on again” seems to correct transcoding of subs.

I have tested this with another file format, that being HVEC Main 10:

This caused the usual transcode issues, When disabling subs I get Direct play with no transcode:

After reenabling subtitles, the stream was uneffected and remained on Direct play:

Just to make sure this wasn’t a delay in transcode kicking in, I allowed the video to play in full with subs on and there was no further issues. A remote stream also started while testing the full episode playing and no further issues were seen:

Posting this on Reddit, people are advising this has been an issue since 1.4 release.

I’ve now rolled back to the last 1.3 build and will test.

Have you tried setting “Burn Subtitles” to “Automatic”, as you have it set to “Only Advanced Formats” it will transcode when using ASS subtitles as it is an advanced format? From your post here I would say the bug is rather that it should be transcoding when you enable the subtitles during playback but for some reason, it isn’t.
