Subtitles = AppleTV & Samsung NU7100 NO GOOD, PMP?

Hi, I’m trying to get HEVC 10bit playback without transcoding to H.264 from a plex player with the subtitles on. Doesn’t seem to matter if you choose Burn Subtitles ‘only image formats’ or ‘always’ or ‘automatic’, they’re always burned in H264 by the server. So when you’re playing a HEVC file which the player is perfectly capable of, if you want the subtitles then the server will automatically transcode down to H264 and burn them in - and fail miserably at it @ 4K HDR.

I do not have a computer that’s capable of outputting 4K HDR @ 60Hz right now, I’m considering buying one to solve this issue, if the current version of Plex Media Player supports NOT burning subtitles but rather just plain old overlaying them while direct playing HEVC 4K HDR.

I would greatly appreciate any advise on how to solve the problem. I’m happy to shell out for a computer if that’s what it takes. FYI I have tried an Amazon Fire TV 4K and a Nvidia Shield. I don’t know if the shield does it out of the box, it might, but the shield outputs DTS which my Sonos playbar doesn’t support (damn them).

PMP cannot output HDR at the moment, because of lacking support in the underlying OS, drivers etc pp.

oh, fail. So… there’s no way to play just Doulby Digital (Sonos playbar restriction) with subtitles in 4K HDR?

Not to my knowledge.

Does the shield rely on burnt in subtitles?

Depends. If it can Direct Play the file, it supports PGS and VOBSUB.
But as soon as it must fall back to Direct Stream, it will also request from the server to burn in subtitles.

Excuse me, just wanted to get my head around this issue. Does it regard PGS subtitles? I didn’t have problem playing HDR10 files with external srt subtitles.
