Subtitles are a issues or is it me?(.ass format)

I find using the “.ass” subtitles cause a need for transcoding instead of being able to be direct played via Plex. I seen some threads suggesting plugins but as Plex no longer lets people use them is there a way besides switching the burn to image format only? That really messes up the subtitles but lets the file load and stream as it normally would without buffering.

What you found were probably references to the “On-Demand Subtitle Search” – this is a feature available to Plex Pass users which allows to select a subtitle from opensubtitles.org (without downloading them first).
Those are SRT subtitles which play with most clients.

If your Substation Alpha subtitles (.ass) don’t play, this could be an alternative course of action.

Hi, thank you for the fast reply. I have pulled some srt files for some shows though they don’t look as good being plain text. Do you know if the plain to add a render portion for the other format?

SRTs have a limited support for very basic formatting (bold, italic, text colors). That being said, many clients don’t support that and might end up showing the underlying raw tags alongside the plain text.

I take it the challenge with your Plex client is that it doesn’t feel like displaying formatted content… technically ASS is also plain text – with more advanced formatting.
Which client are we actually talking about?

A DS718+ with 8GB of ram. I use The web client mostly, I have yet to try with the TV application which I am sure is WebOS.

If you’re playing movies on your desktop/laptop, you might want to consider using the desktop app. It looks like the web client but has a much more solid support for media formats.

Thank you again for such fast answers. I will give that a shot.

The standalone file player hasn’t buffered a single time as of typing. The web client after about a minute or so tends to stop and buffer. I am currently testing with DBS episode 5 and JOJO Episode 10. Do you think they will fix the web version of their player?

I came back to do some checking and the desktop player doesn’t even bother transcoding it just direct plays even with , the to me better subtitle format.
