Subtitles/closed captions just don't work from Plex DVR recordings

I’m super happy now that Plex has a DVR function. It makes life so much easier not having to manage DVR, media center, and HTPC functions from three different apps. Plex DVR records scheduled TV programs through my HDhomerun flawlessly, and the Program Guide makes scheduling this simple. There one hiccup though. When it records a TV show, it does so with embedded subtitles. This is also great because it saves me from having to rely on external subtitle sources. The unfortunate part is that they don’t show up on any Plex media player. I have tried the Amazon Fire app, the local PC and mac apps, and even the web player. None of these recognize any of the embedded subtitles. They just say None in the subtitle area of the program. I have have scoured the forums, and applied just about every fix I could find, including setting up the agents correctly within the Plex server settings. Nothing works. I know the subtitles are there because they show up when I play the .ts files in Kodi. I would rather not have to use Kodi to play my TV recordings. It would be nice to use Plex for this. Please help.

I am having the same issue in Plex using a HAUPPAUGE WinTV-quadHD card. Any assistance that could be provided on this would be very much appreciated.

Bump. When is this basic feature going to be fixed - that and CC during live TV?

If this worked I’d actually use Plex but as it is I use dvblogic software.

I would third this, also I have no idea how there are no external subtitles from opensubtitles.org available either. We love having subtitles for TV shows and this is making it pretty hard to cut the cord for good.

This has been a limitation for me too since I started using Plex months ago (Shield + HD Homerun). It’s incredibly frustrating that recorded OTA tv won’t play with subtitles when my 6+ year old retired Windows Media Center did this flawlessly.

This issue is the only reason I don’t use Plex as my main recorder. All other applications allow playback with closed captions. I use the HDHR recorder for most recordings because it will show CC but that was an issue with their software for quite some time as well.

I’m in the same boat as CRaigCMS…I’ve been using Win7+MCE for more than 8 years now, including 2 years with HAUPPAUGE WinTV-quadHD card. So far so [very] good, no complains here. I came to love MCE for its simplicity and reliability once it works.

I’d like to upgrade my media center PC and WIn7 to Win10 (no rush) so I began looking for MCE alternatives. I cut the cord long long ago so beside Netflix and Amazon my other source of content are OTA TV shows.

Plex came with high recommendations so I installed it (very straightforward, no issues) and shelled 4.99u$s for one month FlexPass in order to test the PVR and scheduling capabilities (I wish it has one day trial but oh well). I had to play with the Plex Media Player Audio settings a little bit in order the get DD 5.1 in my receiver (couldn’t find the ‘passthrough’ checkbox 'though) but at the end, I was able to watch LiveTV with DD 5.1.

I didn’t like the EPG because I’m really accustomed to the MCE EPG grid organization (more information per page), and also because at first glance I couldn’t find any information about the TV name/channel (like ABC 10.1) unless you click on each show. Never mind, with time I’m sure I’ll be able to accept it.

BUT I need Close Caption (CC) yes or yes because I have a deaf in the family. On such mature and stable mediacenter, it never occurs to me that this feature would be missing. I already discarded JRIver because of the same issue, no CC support.

My question is, does somebody know if Plex is going to implement LiveTV CC sometime in the near future? Or is really a very low priority. I like Plex (the UI is neat, the menus are straightforward and best at all, it’s not complicated, very easy to learn) so I can wait a couple of months if this feature is on the horizon.

Thanks in advance

I’m looking for subtitles on OTA recordings as well… I’ve watched TV & movies with subs for more than 15 years and since I have them on all the time there should be no reason why they cannot be recorded.

This is one of the things that I wish I knew before buying the lifetime Plexpass, I hope they look through the forums and see this and implemented. I don’t think is a hard thing to do, HDhomerun DVR does it without any problems and their software is not as robust as Plex is.

I have the same problem here using a DViCO FusionHDTV7 PCI-e tuner card in Windows 7. We started to switch over from Windows Media Center, but noticed captions aren’t working. They are necessary in my household as one of us is deaf. I wonder if we could put in a feature request or file a bug report? Is the feature implemented at all? Is it a problem specific to the tuner cards we are using or to ATSC tuners or the type of subtitles in the signal?

Okay, you’re right there are closed captionings in the ts files created by Plex. I tried opening one in another program and was able to select the subtitle track and it works. The plex players just don’t detect them.

I set up another app to convert the ts files to mp4 and extract the closed captioning to srt files which Plex likes. I set a random show to record this morning as a test and it worked fine but only watched a few minutes of it. I’m going to switch one of our shows over to record in plex now to see how well this setup works.

Bump. Would really like this feature implemented … Apple TV.

Still doesn’t work on apple tv for recorded shows please make it work!

Did subtitles suddenly start working for anyone else? I just noticed my DVR recordings now have subtitles and I didn’t change anything. I’ve noticed it on the newest season from shows starting this fall. I’m not sure exactly when it started. They all say “Unknown (EIA_608)” in subtitles. Still no Live TV subtitles.

Actually, looks like support was added:

I see EIA_608 when selecting, but, selecting it is not providing the Closed Caption dialog. As others have posted, the Close Captioning is there in the TS file as when I play them in VLC the Closed Captioning is displayed. There is a difference in Subtitles, and Closed Captioning from Live TV broadcasts, that Plex Media Player doesn’t seem to support. When watching Live TV using Google Android TV Live Channels app, or any Television in North America, the options are Closed Caption 1, 2, 3, 4, or disable. I just subscribed to Plex Pass, and hope this is an issue they consider important. Accessibility for the hearing impaired is a basic requirement for continued good will and support in most of the world.
