I have an NVIDIA Shield TV Pro (2015) acting as a Plex media server. It has a Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD tunner hooked up to it. I can watch live OTA TV and record OTA shows without any issues. However, for the past 4 days (since I set all this up) I have been trying to get subtitles to work. Here is what I’ve tried:
1 - In agents: Local Media Assets on top.
2 - In Language: Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks. Subtitle mode: Always enabled.
3 - Account audio and Subtitle Settings: Same as in #2
4 - Video settings: I have tried burn subtitles automatic, always and only image formats.
5 - Have Plex automatically transcode (and also not transcode) OTA shows.
6 - Record on the Internal storage (and also record on external HD as a removable storage)).
7 - Verified I have the lastest Plex and Nvidia versions.
After all changes, I still get Subtitles: None (with no arrow to pick anything else) for every single OTA show I record. The server doesn’t have any other movies/shows/programs except for the ones recorded over the air using the setup above.
I have searched everywhere and can’t find a solution that works for me. HELP!!!
closed captioning from OTA/DVR do not currently work in any player including the web app. server cannot see them and they will not show up in any player app.
I wasn’t aware it was not in FAQ but have asked for that to be put in.

I found a way to see the subtitles. This only works for OTA recordings that have not been transcoded. I installed the Plex plug-in for Kodi. Once I am playing the program, I go to Settings -> Kodi Audio Settings -> Enable Subtitles. If more than one Subtitle, select the correct one. After about 2 - 10 seconds, the subtitle should show up. So, subtitles (or close caption) are in the recording. However, Plex is unable to read them. I have only tried in Windows so far. My next step is to try to do it within the NVIDIA Kodi software.
I got them working on the Shield as well using the same method. One step I forgot to mention is that you also need to go to the Kodi Settings -> Player Settings -> Language -> Turn on “Enable Parsing for Closed Captions”. Only issue I have now is that for every show, I have to manually turn on captions. The “Set as default for all media” setting is not sticking.
