Subtitles during foreign audio

Server Version#: 1.13.8.5395
Player Version#: 3.57.1

I am watching TV shows which have foreign audio. I am trying to get subtitles to work during these sections and only these sections. I’ve set my server language settings such that english is preferred for both audio and subtitles and my subtitle mode is “shown with foreign audio”. With these settings I am not seeing any subtitles, even when foreign audio is present.

I noticed VLC was doing this correctly and after doing a little digging I see that it is taking advantage of the default flag on the english subtitle track. So in episodes with no spanish parts there are 2 english subtitle tracks, none of which are default. In episodes with spanish parts there are 3 english subtitle tracks, and default is set on the track which contains subtitles only for the spanish speaking parts. I’m wondering if plex can take advantage of this in a similar fashion.

The ‘default’ flag is not the right flag for these types of subtitles.
You need to set the ‘forced’ flag on the appropriate subtitle track.
This is currently only possible in MKV files or by using external subtitle files.

I’m going to have to disagree with you here. What you present may be the intended way for this to work, but this will require me going through all my media and setting that flag when the source media files already have enough information to play them appropriately, and other software takes advantage of this. To me, it makes much more sense to have this work out of the box as opposed to having users sift through and muck with their files to get it to work.
