Is it possible to have an extra subtitle mode? Namely, a 'Manually selected, unless marked as forced' option.
This way forced subtitles would be automatically displayed, and burned into content transcoded/synced by Plex . Whereas currently, its all or nothing (unless you manually select it). If this were possible, it would mean 'normal' subtitle tracks that aren't set as forced could be used manually (at will), and 'foriegn language' subtitle tracks that are set as forced, would be displayed automatically.
Currently, I have to set the Subtitle Mode to Always Enabled and remove all but the 'foriegn language' subtitle tracks from my media to get around this, but I would prefer to have all subtitle tracks available in case I do actually want them.
Also make sure you have the option "Automatically select audio tracks" checked at the top of the Language panel... the Forced flag for MKVs do work as desired/expected :)
Touche, the forced flag does make the track Plex's top priority.
Bump for the "Show forced subtitles only" option...Better?
and a quote from my other thread explaining my position:
Here are PMS's available settings for Subtitle Mode: Manually Selected, Shown with foreign audio, Always On.
All 3 of those options should only affect complete subtitle tracks. None of them should determine if the forced track is shown. Forced subtitles should be shown regardless of whether I have Subtitle Mode selected to Manually Selected or Always On.
There will never be a time where I want to watch Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and not have the apes' part subtitled (It's more than half of the movie). PMS's default Subtitle Mode is Manually Selected. Even with that selection, forced subtitles should be shown without me needing to do anything (i.e. If I've never seen the movie (or I shouldn't have to remember) the apes aren't just grunting at each other, but instead are talking/supposed to be subtitled and then have to manually select them). Forced subtitles are so much a part of the movie it should be as if they were hardcoded into the video.
I emphasized "should" because imo forced should literally mean forced, but some people may disagree or their hardware can't handle transcoding. Which is why this thread is about making "Show forced subtitles only" an option.
Forced subtitles are so much a part of the movie it should be as if they were hardcoded into the video.
This Subtitle issue is confusing. I have finally figured out what boxes to check in Handbrake to make foreign language subtitles show up when playing a converted DVD in VLC. I thought Plex would acknowledge the same “default” flag but it appears it doesn’t…
I just want foreign audio subtitles to show up without having to use the “burn in” feature in Handbrake. Why is this so difficult?
Agreed – and following the previous thread, the theory was that it’s doable…so long as the 1st language and 1st subtitle in the file match and the forced flag for the subtitle is set to true.
I, however, have movies where I am unable to duplicate the above. I’m in agreement that a forced subtitle should be forced. Anyone try to watch The Revenant without Subtitles? Or the most recent one I ran into, Arrival? It feels like you just missed half the movie.
I go through the trouble of getting these subtitles to be embedded into the video file in the appropriate manner (sometimes after the fact with ffmpeg or MKVToolNix); Plex should honor that. If the transcoding hardware is the concern, then make it an option in the menu and turn it off by default. Those of us with powerful enough hardware for transcoding can enable it.
