Subtitles ruining img quality?

Many of my videos are seriously disrupted by subtitles, that is, if I turn them on, picture gets pixelated and resolution seems to drop. Is there a fix for this comming up or is it a price to pay for using the Xbox One?

I'd be guessing its your transcoding kicking in to add subtitles to the stream. Just a guess. If you bump up your transcoder quality does it get better/worse?

Haven’t noticed that option until now, I’ll give it a shot once the kids are done playing minecraft

Tried all alternatives there, even "make my cpu hurt" though that one worried me a bit :p Results are the same, pixelation and reduced resolution. I've noticed it doesn't affect all videos, in fact most of them handle subs just fine. Perhaps its just a bad quality rip.

I think you misunderstood Heskis. What you changed is how much CPU power the transcoder is allowed to take. What Heskis meant is that you should increase the quality of the specific transcode you are doing. Do this:

1. Go back to the main XB1 Plex menu.

2. At the top right you see your name. Choose it and enter it.

3. Choose "Local Streaming quality", and set it as high as you believe your server can handle. If unsure, set it to 4Mbps and then try the movie again. If that works, go back and try 8 Mbps. One of those should be to your liking.

Remember that this requires your PMS computer to have a CPU which is not ancient. That CPU must live-convert the video for you.

With my experience its the transcoding the subtitles in the movie! No other option unless you recode the whole movie with burnin subtitles so it doesn't have to transcode it for you on the fly.

I'm pretty sure you have a beta build that I don't. The only option at top right that I can see is to pick a server, and nothing happens if I choose it. That means, I've never been able to see any kind of setting in the Xbox app.

Thoughts?

Ok, well no I do not got a beta build. I do have the PS4 version though, and I was almost 100% sure it had the settings part in the same place as the XB1 app. But if it isn't there then I must be wrong.

Well then, the other place you can try is when you start up the movie. There should be a settings icon next to the play/pause/rewind/forward icons. Enter that one and change the quality in there.

Is there any chance that Xbox One does not have to transcode a m4v file with subtitles enabled in the future? (Apple TV requires no transcoding in this situation)

Oh right. There's indeed an option in the playback view. That's kind of odd not having a global setting but this should work - thanks for the hint!
