Suggestions from a new Plex user

Hi, being a new Plex Pass member, I have had to refer to this forum for a number of things and I still don’t have everything working correctly. It occurred to me that life could be much easier for all that rely on this forum for information and guidance if more time were spent on improving the search engine on this site.

There have been a number of times that I will put something like “How to add my movie collection to Plex” and I am directed to several post non of which answers the question but after several hours, I found the answer and I might say , explained it in an excellent way. The post is headed; Creating Libraries. Another example is; Why can’t I synced my player with the server?. Again, the offering does not answer the question. Upon further research, I found “Why can’t my plex app find or connect to the plex media server? Again, a very detailed explanation of why that might be happening. I could give many more examples but I think you get the point. I believe that most of the items we are searching for are already here, they are just very hard to find.

So my point is that we, (the users as well as the team), could save countless hours if the search engine could be improved. So, if anybody agrees with me and would like to send a message to the team, chime in here and let your voice be heard. Thanks

There is an excellent Support and FAQ Site which solves like 99% of all the problems users usually have and explains very detailed how everything works and how you should set it up. Sadly most just don’t even have a look at the support pages before posting.

Thanks, I’ll have a look at it. It still doesn’t address the issue of the search engine though.

The search function at the top of the forum just searches forum post and not any of the support docs.
So what is returned by that is only as good as the questions asked. If I can make a suggestion, use google search, I put your sample search string How to add my movie collection to Plex in google and it returned the exact support doc that you would need to do that.

As a long time Plex user, I do have to agree with @chanita1 that the Forum’s search is poor, very poor.

This explains why it is so difficult to find support documentation. May I ask why it is limited to forum post? And are you saying that it would be better to use google for our searches?

Well, part of the reason forum search sucks here is that Plex switch to the horrible Vanilla Forums platform, which falls short in so many ways… search just being one of them. The forum experience here has been far less-pleasant ever since but it doesn’t appear that Plex is interested in rethinking this poor decision, despite overwhelming negative feedback from users (the reason that you don’t see much complaining anymore is that we’ve pretty much given up that Plex is going to listen to us and address this by finding better forum software).

I usually put site:forums.plex.tv into google and go from there.

Okay, I get the picture. It’s really disappointing that it is what it is but now that I know how it works, it will no doubt help in my searches.

How can I close this thread?

To echo the others, I always search in google for anything Plex related. Just easier.
