Support for audiobooks

I could deal with the “Can’t remember playback position across an album” thing by just merging all of the files into a single large file. Without access to playback positioning on my android device though I’m left relying on my chromebook and a bluetooth speaker to handle this.

For those of you having trouble with this problem. You will find if you do more than a bit of testing that if you click on the actual track, not the album (even if the album only has one track), that it will give you the option to resume playback. Preserving positioning across albums would likely fix this issue,

I’m in the midst of curating all of my books to be kept on my plex media server now. I plan on using audacity to merge all of the files as it is completely free and easy to use. Voila. No more worrying about preserving positioning.

+1 Hoping the resume playback thing gets resolved on the iPhone. It’s very buggy at the minute. I wish it was more robust like it is for videos. Sometimes if I have to restart the plex app, I lose my position for my books. Other times I don’t. Why can’t these things get synced to the server? Also, it would be nice to see full support for an audiobook library. One that allows us to have a description for each book, and the ability to mark books as read, and lastly, the ability to treat an audio album as one book. I feel as though most of this should be easy, since they already exist for video libraries. If chapter support for m4b is developed, all the better. However, that might involve a lot of change on the player side.

Hi

I’m new to this thread as I have only just started using Plex for my audiobooks and recorded radio plays. Plex on the Samsung Smart TV does not seem to remember the track position. Is that the same for others? However, it does seem to work on my Roku Stick. Indeed, when I switched from Plex on the TV to Plex on the Roku, it even remembered the track position from when I was using it on the Samsung TV. I’ll have to keep expermenting.

Plex REALLY needs an audiobook suite that has added functionality and a function that serves audiobooks well. I’d be thrilled.

+1 This would be a nice feature to have.

I’m finding it doesn’t work for content that is synced via plexpass if listening offline or to ‘preferred synced content’.

+1 here as well!

But on which devices the position remember works already, on the iphone it don’t works realy. (Synced library in m4b format).

+1 That would be good

Just wanted to add my interest in a fully fledged audiobook feature set.

Please give us Audiobook support.

Liked.

Would love to see this for resuming audiobooks between synced devices and the web. It’s already so close to being useful for this. The main thing would be to remember position across the entire “album,” not just tracks.

Well said. I’d love this to replace my current audiobook app.

Please implement this feature…

Full audio book support is my vote.

Not sure if there is a official list of features requested for audiobook support but this is what I would like to see. I am making this list for audiobook/podcast/radio drama/audio courses as they are all similar to me. This list is not ordered in any specific order. Also not sure if we can add different parts to a request like this.

Listened / Unlistened Just like videos Mark what files have not been listened to. This will be very beneficial when there are multifile books. You would then be able to hit play on the “album” / book and it start one the correct file instead of having to remember what file you are currently on.

Bookmarks Having the ability to quickly jump to a favorite part or a part you wish you relisten to.

Sleep Timer I sometimes listen to books going to sleep and don’t like to wake up to the book being done.

Variable Speed Playback Sometimes it is nice to slow down a action scene or speed up a slow reader.

m4b Chapter Support Full support of this file type.

Folder Structure There needs to be a official way to structure folders/books. Currently my library is structured as Author(folder) - - >Series(folder)–>Book(folder) - - > audio files. It might just be that I have it structured wrong but my Plex audiobook library is completely incorrect. I have to use the folder view to find anything.

I feel like remembering track position is a big step in the right direction but there is a lot of polishing that can be done still to make this complete with and blow out of the water some of the other audiobook platforms.

Metadata agent an agent that auto pulls book summary, cover, author(s), narrorator(s), production company, and so forth

Go to Position I increasingly find the need to be able to input directly the track position.

Larger Skip Sizes Along with go to position it would be nice to skip larger gaps 60 seconds or 300 seconds.

Improved position text On Android the text for the current position gets cut off. Currently I only see hh:m. Would be nice to see the full position hh:mm:ss

Im sure there are some points I am missing. What do you guys think?

There needs to be lots of work done to audiobooks, really it needs its own catergory instead of being in music, and i would love if plex just read local nfos for metadata

I completely agree: Full Audio Book support (including position sync over devices) would be a killer feature for PLEX. This would make it definitely to the best media server.

I think having audiobooks with position tracking and pulling from audible and goodreads would be a tremendous addition to Plex. With a combined vote over a thousand when you look at the multiple threads, it is a given that it is desired by a large part of the community.

Adding the ability to read epubs, pdf, html, and mobi books would be a definite plus along with audiobooks and support from Goodreads and IBDB. Calibre Integration would be huge!

While I don’t care about comics personally, there are many here that do so having a reading library, a comic library and an audiobook library would be key features that would bring Plex to becoming a media solution more than just a home theater solution.
