Support for audiobooks

I really do wish Plex had better (local) audiobook support.

Yeah, we’ve definitely discussed internally a fair amount. The conclusion was that it was likely something we’d like to support, but that there were a fair number of nuances around it which would make it less than trivial—some of the chapter-isms and different formats for books (file per chapter, file per book, e.g.) were non-trivial to handle well. We also wanted to find a good metadata source.

On the flip side, some of the things we’ve done in the new advanced audio player (silence compression, voice boost, pre-buffering) clearly help make audiobook playback even better too…

Regarding metadata sources, I think Musicbrainz (plus theaudiodb and fanart) should be good sources to utilize. The only thing holding back Musicbrainz from being the best solution is that it is community-driven, which means it is reliant on the community to expand and update its database. To that end, I actually have been updating Musicbrainz myself by slowly importing my entire audiobook library there.

Just commenting to give even more voice to the idea of audiobook support on Plex.

Honestly, I have many friends taht listen to audiobooks daily and don’t watch that much TV. Not only could I share my server with them, but it would also serve as marketing for them to get into the platform.

A lot of people who watch a lot of TV or Movies already heard of Plex. Time to give audiobooks a try.

If I can’t skip chapters because of my files being in one file alone, I’m really honestly ok with that.

Just debugging existing features is all I need. When moving between devices, or sometimes just randomly on the same device, the “store track progress” does not behave and resets to the beginning of chapter or book. I’m sure there are tons of us willing to test any beta.

Hello, your app is great for movies, TV shows and music, I’m an absolute fan !!! But for audiobooks, Plex is not what it should be! If you listen to an audiobook, stop and listen again Plex does not know where the last stand was. As with the movie, it would be nice to have these possibilities. Please add this option to the app …
