Support for audiobooks

don't get it. why isn't this already implemented ??

Plex already has the ability to play/pause content on every device. So i really don't think this can be too hard, to simply apply this feature to audio-books ... come on

I am for this to I know a full implementation would be a lot of work but just remember the play back position would be a great place to start!

Actually this "could" be implemented on a client by client basis. It really requires no server implementation at all. However the "sharing" between clients might need some server side changes but it would be a simple thing to implement on many clients.

Even the Roku that for the longest time had no support for seeking withing audio files now has support for seeking, and therefore bookmarking, available within the SDK,

But from the feedback I have received from various people, including developers, is that there is little interest for getting bookmarking in audio files implemented. On the Roku I have even had people tell me that correctly playing audiobooks is "unimportant" as the demand is miniscule.

I really wish my Rokus could play audiobooks correctly as it would provide me with a more unified way to use all my media.

As much as I would like to see this I won't hold my breath waiting for it. The interest, on the part of the developers, unfortunately
just seems too low.

?!?!

guys... the PMS already has the ability to mark play/pause states and give them back on another device ! this simply CAN'T be any "hard work" on implementing this.

requested for 1 1/2 year with over 100 votes and nothing has happened .. although it's just adding the video-play/pause-function to audio ..

i mean, if you wan't to , simply add a black-video-line to the audibooks and add them to a movie-library inside plex - and guess what? you got play/pause states for audiobooks.

so it's obvious that Plex already has everything needed

I'd love an audiobook library type that kept track of metadata and where you left off..

Audibook Section Please!!!

i have also been wanting this for a age,

atm i have a work around but its HARD work initally.

What ive been doing is recoding my books i want to listen to into one single file, then let plex index them.

When out and about i sync that folder then use smart audiobook player on android to listen to the files as i need the bookmark feature, but this wont sync accross all devices which is a pain.

@offtopicĀ

The other thing ive also been doing is uploading books recoded at lower quality (using 32kbs with fraunhofer works suprisingly well with talking books) to google play music, if you keep the files under 250mb you can store 20,000 audiobooks in case of disaster. I set up a new account on a seperate gmail account for this.@

Right now, Plex doesn't see the .m4b file format I keep my audio books in. Ā If they implement audiobooks, I hope they support that file format. Ā I really like it because it allows me to consolidate lots of smaller Ā .mp3 files and still preserve the chapter markers.

Full featured audiobook support would be great! Including support for artworks, descriptions, audiobook filetypes, chapters etc.

I don't know if there already is an online database for audiobooks, that also offers an API Plex could use.

Audio books use ISBNs like any other books so API data should be available from any number of sources. Chapter support should also be relatively simple as they are usually distributed as separate audio files. Any ā€œsingle-fileā€ audio books are usually just glorified archive files containing standard audio formats.

As an audio book Narrator I would personally love to see this feature added to Plex.

@ aeonsablaze: I didn't know that about single files being glorified archives. Ā Thanks for the information :)
