Support for audiobooks

nja Hörbücher hört doch keiner und auf android tv. sind probleme seit november völlig normal^^

Wow. It looks like you can still sign up for that, but if you didn’t already know it was a thing, you could never actually figure out about it or be told how to sign up for it.

EDIT: Okay, wait… Plex News also appears to be gone. I disabled it as soon as they allowed us to, but now I literally can’t find out where the option is to reenable it. …Not that I want to use it. It’s just surprising it’s not a thing anymore despite the fact that nobody asked for it nor cared about it. [/s]

Meanwhile, Audiobook Support is the third most-voted-for feature request, with audiobooks reportedly being the fastest growing media format, and still nothing from Plex.

@elan Two years ago, when you last chimed in about Audiobooks, you said it was too hard to implement. Now that Plex News and Plex Arcade are depreciated (defunct?) features, I would hope you might give this feature more consideration. Since, you know, people actually want to use it.

EDIT 2: Well, I suppose I shouldn’t say “and still nothing” because, to be fair, Plex does play m4b files, and use Musicbrainz as an agent. But there is still no multi-track album-level resume; no use of embedded chapter marks; no bookmarks; no Continue Listening; no “Listened/Watched” status; and no inline collections.

No multi-track album-level resume and no embedded chapter marks is the real deal breaker because it means Plex either forgets what chapter/track you’re on, or else there are no separate chapters and seeking through a book is extremely unwieldy.

I am just adding my +1 here. I want audio book support too.

@elan is there a chance this will be happening?

The whole music feature and Plex amp are amazing, the only thing missing for me in the audio department of Plex is proper Audiobook support to make it perfect

would really like to have this feature

For those with iOS, don’t you just use Prologue? It’s quite brilliant, has good support and is updated regularly.

nearly 10 years…shows they take requests seriously!

I use M4B encoded audiobooks in Plex and it mostly works well, the biggest improvement I can think of to improve things would be to:
display the internal chapter names within the m4b files so 1 file can be used for a whole book
have the ability to go to the next/previous chapter within the book
track the progress of audiobooks so you know where in the chapter you are up to
disable for audiobooks or make optional the mark as finished if X% is reached

Plex youre soooooo close. Just need to display those m4b chapters and mark it as a different Library. You can do it.

It’s been a while since I used Plex for my audiobooks. What did they do?

They support the use of m4b files (insofar as they also support m4a files); and they changed the primary music metadata agent to Musicbrainz (which is community supported and allows the inclusion of audiobooks in its database).

What they haven’t done is provide support for embedded chapters in single-file books, nor an album-level resume feature for track-split books.

Technically, those two issues are supported on the server side because Chronicle and Prologue (which are third party mobile apps) make use of those features. But these features are not available for any officially supported Plex clients.

Also they haven’t provided a Continue Listening feature, Mark as Completed, or Inline Collections, but those features are a moot point without embedded chapter support and/or album-level resume.

I think Prologue builds its own database to store album level resume.

I don’t know. I don’t use Prologue (because I don’t use iOS). I assumed it functioned similarly to Chronicle in that regard. The Chronicle dev specifically said on Discord that Chronicle’s ability to track book progress is a a function already available on the server, just not implemented on official Plex clients: https://discord.com/channels/896141265639456779/896141320253493289/903394202786873344

I do know Bookcamp uses its own server, external to Plex, to track your book progress. So I didn’t include Bookcamp when I said that.

+1

Would be nice to have a native audiobooks support !

Yes it would! But here just take the “more ways to watch” (that we’ll call a “beta”, but push out to everyone) and ignore the 1820 votes for this

Seconded. Once I started using Prologue I stopped caring about this feature. Prologue does everything I need it to.

Plex for eBooks, on the other hand…

+1 for this. Using Chronicle for now but it’d super awesome if Plex could track progress for audio files without skipping the last bits of a book
