Support for audiobooks

+1 for remembering where to resume from, it’s so hit and miss. You wouldn’t think it would that hard to fix. I use Plexamp and have tried Chronicle but it too was hit and miss. And yes I have turned on store track progress. All of my books are in 1 file in mp3 or m4a/m4b and plexamp/Chronicle have trouble keeping track with either starting all over again or most of the time will pick up an old position and stick with that position for the entire book. I wouldn’t even mind if the plexamp just read and stored the position of downloaded items and just stored it locally, not the best solution but at least I could work with that but that feature still doesn’t even work.
Please plex Devs look into this problem come up with a solution.

So… I just realized that Emby now has proper Resume functionality for audiobooks, after their v4.7 released last week.

Also, their audiobook libraries support inline collections.

The lack of chapter support is infuriating, simply because I know they are there for most of the m4b files.

I am very new to audiobooks in Plex, and it was saddening to see some of the missing features be suggested for close to 10 years. :frowning:

i use plex+audnexus agent server side and chronicle on my phone as the client. does a decent enough job but its no replacement for a real setup. wish plex would hurry up and implement audiobook and ebook support.

Totally Agree, only wish they had download ability.

Pretty sure you can download with Prologue.

In the year 2022, we prefer to hear our books rather than read them. PLEX, books are also a sort of media! However, you want it to be set up such that multiple people can watch the same movie at the same time.

Imagine having 1 of your votes locked up here for 9 years :stuck_out_tongue:
Seems like this would be profitable too.

I have lately been using a different audiobook server app called Audiobookshelf. Its only install option on Windows is via Docker (Desktop), so it’s somewhat of a bother to install at first, but it is TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Also, their discord is very active.

This request is close to 10 years old, can we please have some feedback?

If this is not in the realm of possibility, please close the thread.

That’s how feature suggestions work… threads get closed if Plex rejects things. Plex don’t usually comment on their roadmap or ETAs… so a long running suggestion like this is just that: it’s not been ruled out but has also not (yet) been confirmed. This can be frustrating but that’s the way it is.

after 10 years I would argue that it’s beautiful here with Plex HTPC, GPU transcoding, PlexAmp, & maybe 20 players on 100 OS versions. When you think about it, though, audiobooks are just music without the instruments. So it’s not a stretch to start your own business that runs a Plex Media Server rack and sells access to an audiobook “music” library, with proper compensation to Authors and Publishers. I bet that Libby wouldn’t be averse to modernizing their funky interface, either.

I would settle for support to force matching based on Audible ID
Could we get support for .plexmatch to use Audible IDs

Audible supports unique ID’s for its library when you wish to share them:
for example
https://www.audible.com/pd/<TITLE_NAME>/1039400930?

Where 1039400930 is the unique ID of this audio book.
This ID is globally unique and searchable from the Audible search

If you search for

it will automatically expand to the full title URL
https://www.audible.com/pd/<TITLE_NAME>/1039400930?

With this it should be relatively easy to extend .plexmatch support of Audible Matching Hints

There is a third-party plugin to match audiobooks in Plex by the Audible ASIN.

I would LOVE to have an Audio Book library type.

To me, an audio book is almost exactly the same as a TV series, except without any video component. Additional books in a series could be considered as “seasons” while chapters of a book (individual audio files) are “episodes.”

I have not yet tried converting an audio book to MP4 and registering it as a TV Series… maybe that already works? If not, is it such a big difference that the gods of Plex are incapable of making it work? I think this could be a VERY popular improvement.

I’m new here but I too would really like to have audiobook support in Plex.

+1 more drop in the bucket of people that want audiobook support.
It’s somewhat weird how they add features nobody asks for, but ignore something as big as audiobooks. Hopefully, that just means they have something planned.

Absolutely - and combined with the multi-speed option for audio (as well as video) this would make audiobooks easier to listen to - probably not something you would want on the music type typically! If podcast feature gets added, useful there too.

Welcome to the Sh*t Show  Sorry but your about 5 months to late for that.
Podcasts and Web Shows are going away on April 15, 2022
