Support for IMAX Enhanced

Currently, Plex plays IMAX Enhanced, but there is no logo to indicate that the film supports it. I’d love it if you could add the logo to the library so it’s easy to see which films in your library are in IMAX Enhanced.

What is IMAX Enhanced?

IMAX at home. It fills your TV to IMAX’s aspect ratio (1cm black bars instead of huge ones) and can hook up to certain receivers for true IMAX sound.

“IMAX Enhanced” is almost entirely a creation of marketing. As far as I’m aware, there are no unique technical specs associated with it. It’s just the IMAX company saying “yup, this meets our standards” and making OEMs pay a licensing fee.

It kinda is if you don’t have the right equipment, but on IMAX Certified gear there is an insane difference. Especially in sound quality.

That was my impression as well. A strange half-commitment to an arbitrary aspect ratio, promises of video remastering with grain removal, and a weird version of DTS/DTS:X … but not all content gets all of those things.

@CaptainKellan what additional support are you asking for? Plex supports the aspect ratio, and can do DTS/DTS:X passthrough on capable hardware.

It would be nice if Plex could recognize the aspect ratio and add an IMAX logo (similar to what Disney+ does) so it’s easier to tell at first glance which version of the film I’m looking at.

I don’t speak for Plex, but I’m confident Plex will never add an IMAX logo based on aspect ratio.

  • 1.9:1 (digital IMAX) is barely different from 1.78 (16:9 TV widescreen) or 1.85 (“flat” cinema widescreen standard). They’re too similar to differentiate reliably.
  • 1.9:1 isn’t exclusive to IMAX. Other studios have released content in 1.9:1.
  • Direct rips/remuxes aren’t cropped - they’re matted out to 2160 on consumer “4K” media.

Make a collection, and/or use Plex Meta Manager to add a badge to posters.

I have no idea how IMAX (the company) works, but IMAX feels like one of those stuck up companies that will ask you to license the use of their logo. If so, is it really worth Plex paying additional licencing fees just to display a logo?

It would be nice if Plex could detect DTS/DTS:X tracks with IMAX flag.
