Support for M3U playlistss in Live TV

Many IP TV providers provide a channel list with TS streams defined in an M3U playlist, often with HLS seperation of streams to support multiple bit rates. They also use a groupid tag to place channels into a sutiable categorisation for use in the EPG TV guides.

Please consider adding support for M3U as a tuner type in DVR/Live TV. I have just tried out Emby’s version of this, and it kills Plex dead in my house for live tv.

It would be great to get this in Plex however you can already do this via xteve.

I have this working flawlessly

xteve is fine but it requires TV Guide (EPG).

Edit: xteve has dummy xTeVe Dummy (EPG) which works perfectly for any kind of m3u playlist. xteve is almost perfect with ffmpeg. I’m currently using it with https://apollotv.online/ which is good provider for m3u playlist.

Some providers offer archives (timeshift, catchup). It needs support as well.

Hello Mark, how were you able to get Apollo working with xTeVe? I’ve tried xTeVe and Telly and both give me the same error message not able to stream. I was told that’s because Apollo uses TS. Please advise on how you were able to play these? Did you need to install ffmpeg? I’m using freenas and have my services running in instances “jails”.

Id love this. And the ability to share TV channels with any user, not just home users

Hello @djczer, as long as you have ffmpeg installed in your machine (where the xteve is installed), the settings for xteve I’m sharing below will work. I’m not sure how to install ffmpeg in a NAS but it might depend on the OS (I suggest try googling it. once you have it, next steps will not be hard).

xTeVe -> Settings

  1. Stream Buffer: FFmpeg: (FFmpeg connects to the streaming server)
  2. FFmpeg Binary Path: /usr/bin/ffmpeg
    • it depends on your ffmpeg installation, in my case my ffmpeg is located in /usr/bin/ffmpeg
  3. FFmpeg Options: -hide_banner -loglevel error -i [URL] -c:v copy -f hls pipe:1

I’ve ran xteve but my current provider has a nice guide and keeps everything organized. With xteve everything comes in at channel 1000 and you have to manually adjust channels. This is nice for providers who don’t have good guide data but a pain for those that do. Plus it’s another thing to host. Emby and Jellyfin have way better support for this. It’s almost run media out of Plex and live TV form those. It’s time that Plex adds this. Sharing would be nice too

Will be a great feature to have!
For now I’m using xTeve, it’s working pretty well but when compare is less reactive and less fiable (disconnections) than using an app tv on my smartTV. And in more, I don’t have the 450 channels limitation

Just posting so Plex doesn’t think this topic or need has died. Along with all other varieties in the forums that constantly get removed because they are duplicates (aka customer interest).

This needs to happen, IPTV is the future of broadcasting. I mean even the change-resistant BBC are now moving over to IPTV because satellite and OTA are just not sustainable for HD content (Freeview and Freesat are going and are being replaced by the IPTV service called Freely)

Plex has a DVR feature, it is one of the main features that Plex advertises to purchase Plex Media Server. xTeve is not solution to get DVR working with IPTV, to think it is a solution is to say you should grab some free wheels from a random bloke down the road to get your car off the showroom floor.

Good Afternoon

I am a long time customer of Plex I have nothing but good things to say and have recommended your product to many of my customers.

Not to be a smart alec but your guidelines for posting a feature request is to search to see if there is a similar request. In doing so there is literally hundreds of topics requesting this …that should tell you (developers) something your customers want

Recently I have ventured into the world of IPTV and although I have helped many of my customers setup live TV via plex the one glaring hole in the Plex platform is the absence of IPTV support

Yes there are many Apple TV apps that provide this functionality but I feel I like most ….especially the older folks don’t have the want or the interest to learn an entirely new platform when they are already familiar with the Plex platform and live tv which is essentially the same as IPTV is already within Plex

As I mentioned above many of your customers have been requesting this for years and for myself I would be willing to pay an additional yearly cost on top of my subscription if reasonable. Multiply that by all the other users I see in your forums expressing the same thought and willingness to purchase IPTV as an add on it would be a win win for both you and your customer base …is this something possibly on the horizon

Thank you in advance for your reply it is greatly appreciated!!

Best Regards
Chris
