Support for managing music with explicit language

It is great that Plex has the parental guidance features for movies and TV through Plex Home, but this control is missing when it comes to music. I have some music that I would like to easily filter from my 5 year old when I push shuffle.

Here are some aspects it would be great to see:

  • Ability to make albums as explicit
  • Ability to mark individual tracks as explicit
  • Ability to skip explicit tracks from shuffle play

If anyone has a work around to manage this now, please let me know.

You could use the Labels tag as a workaround. The drawbacks are that this is only available at the album level, and you kinda have to do it backwards (add a label to the “kid-safe” albums, rather than the explicit-language ones).

This may sound daunting, since you may have to add labels to a large number of albums, but, just in case you aren’t aware, you can add labels to any number of albums at once.

Set your Library to display Albums. On the left sidebar in Plex Web, find the ‘Select’ button. Click it to remove the checkmark. This puts you into Select mode (seems backward, I know). Now click on the items you want. A checkmark will appear (or an orange vertical bar for tracks) on selected items. You may multi-select items by using the Ctrl or Shift key (Cmd key on Apple) while clicking on items. Ctrl+click allows you to select multiple individual items. Shift+click allows you to select a range of items (Shift+click first and last items, and everything between them will be selected).

Once you have made your selections, click the ‘Edit’ button in the left sidebar. Go to the Sharing page, and add the label you want to use.

You’ll have to create a login for your kids, if you haven’t already, and set the restrictions for that user to only allow the ‘kid-safe’ label you just created.

I still think a formal approach to this would be better and easier for people in the long run. I hope Plex will consider it.

As it turns out, there’s an existing request for blacklist filtering, which is pretty much what you’re asking for. Rather than spreading the vote across threads, it would be best for us to add our votes to that thread (vote by clicking ‘Like’ on the first post in the thread).
