Plexamp & Explicit Lyrics / Parental Advisory Content

Just wondering how to handle explicit music / lyrics in Plexamp. I have many albums in my library that I don’t want my kids to stumble upon in a library radio shuffle, till they are older.

I was wondering what is the best way for me to handle songs with explicit lyrics or themes that are not family friendly in Plexamp. Is there a way to build a mix minus explicit lyrics?

The only thing I can think of is to create a whole new library minus any tracks that have explicit lyrics and then when my kids are using plexamp if they hit library radio they won’t stumble on anything from the gangsta rap era. Remember those days?

Anyway, just trying to get ideas on how to handle this.

It would be excellent if there was a way for Plex/Plexamp to autotag, or label, or something and then maybe on the library level an option to exclude or include explicit content in the mixes and radios? Maybe when creating a new library the option to choose a library built on explicit material or not?

I am just throwing ideas out there and trying to figure out how to handle my explicit/parental advisory content in my library. I don’t need my 3 year old running around the house quoting Dr. Dre. LOLOL

You can add a label manually to an album. I didn’t find the option for artists or tracks. I would imagine Plex would respect those labels in a music library.

I’ve never personally used labels to restrict content, but lots of people do, and I hear it works well. I can’t help you out setting that up, but Parental Controls | Plex Support and Restricting the Shares | Plex Support would get you started.

Thanks @leelynds that got me started.

I tried and tested some labels and tagging in Plex it was time consuming and I know I would obsess over tags and labels if I started down that path. I needed something more simple, set and forget. And something that I could do on the fly as I put CD’s or files into the library.

I went with a more primitive and basic method for dealing with it. I just created another folder on my Hard Drive named Explicit Music and moved all of my Explicit Content to that folder. I then renamed my music library to Family Music Library and created a new Plex Music library named All My Music. I then restricted the All My Music library from the little ones.

To move my files over I fought with MusicBrainz Picard for awhile and created a custom tag and script called [ExplicitContent]. The script adds “- ExpCon” to the end of the audio file and then moves the files to the Explicit Content folder. So far everything is working fine and none of my metadata is out of whack.

I pointed Picard at my library over night and it sorted and stuffed the music into the folders and now I don’t have to worry about tags, or labels. Explicit music is dealt with. And since I use Picard to bring new music in, the script will continue to sort for me. I will say planning the folders and the script took me a solid two hours to figure out and test. And my music library is divided into two folders now which is a little annoying but no big deal.
