Support for movies in 21:9 ratio for Ultrawide monitors

I’ve seen a few forum posts relating to this subject and that support was going to be added in a future releases of Plex. I’m about to purchase a new monitor and an Ultrawide would benefit me for work purposes in terms of screen estate however, I also want my monitor for watching movies. I’m a big movie fan and would love to watch my movies in full 21:9 ratio on a new Ultrawide screen. I’ve been a member and user of Plex for many years and all my movies are stored and watched using my Plex Server, streamed across to all my devices. Could you please confirm if support for Ultrawide monitors is available, or will be available soon to help me make my decision on what type of monitor I buy next. I know that plugins exist when watching via a web browser such as ‘Zoom to fit’ or ’ Ultrawidify’ however, support for HD audio and Atmos will not be available when played via a web browser.

You can bend Plex HTPC to do your will: Using Plex HTPC on 21:9 aspect ratio screen - #2 by o_spring

Actually, the above workaround might not be needed anymore.
This is a 21:9 video (stored without black borders on top and bottom) which is shown correctly on my monitor:
(the monitor is wider than 21:9 though)

Hi OttoKerner,

Thank you for your fast response. I hope I can bend Plex to my will  Are you saying that Plex may now support 21:9 aspect ratio by default? Have you tried with other movies? Its great news if so… I’d really like an ultrawide monitor.

If plex is not supportive, do you know from person experience that the link you’ve provided works? Sounds like you have an ultrawide monitor bigger than what I’m looking for, and you must be using Plex for your movies?

The article works perfectly fine. It is a simple copy&paste operation.

I have to compute different zoom factors for my monitor of course, but the example values are already suitable for a 21:9 monitor, like yours.

(this file is an “UHD remux”, so it does have black borders on top and bottom. Which is actually the only case where black borders should be an issue. All other files, if they are recoded anyway, should have their black borders cropped by default. I can’t imagine any reason to keep them in the file.)

Here is a user who just figured it out for the other Plex desktop app: Inputmaps not working on Plex for Windows, working on HTPC - #6 by German

Thank you for your help OttoKerner. I think I will get an Ultrawide given that there seems to be workable workarounds, and it will be excellent seeing my movies in large 21:9 ratio on a 34inch screen. The multitasking for work will also be great. Thank you and I will keep you posted if I need anymore assistance once I have my new monitor.
