I implemented a workaround sometime back, downgraded to an earlier PMS version, created the playlist and reupgraded back. Worked like a charm. Now I just need to remember never to delete that playlist ever‼️
If your workaround is still using the sync engine, it may stop working at some point. My iPad client stated that synced downloads would be removed by the end of the year.
The ONLY way to set next unwatched episodes is to go to EACH show and Download next x unplayed episodes. I will need to repeat it about 100 times to cover the shows I want to have on my iPad.
I’m not sure why Plex is totally ignoring this issue that so many people are not happy with. Seems simple to add a download option for all shows in Continue Watching?!?!?!? That would make some of us VERY happy.

I have more bad news for you concerning smart collections, new download feature does not work with smart collections…
