Unfortunately, due to the change on how the new Home page works, this is no longer possible.
Please consider bringing this back, or at least have the ability to sync smart collections
That’s incredibly frustrating. I depend on this feature. Thankfully I have one sync job from before these changes that still works, but once that breaks or I want to add one for another library I’ll be out of luck.
What’s the thinking behind removing features like this? “I don’t do it, therefore no one does?” How is it okay for you take features away users paid for? Syncing like this is literally why I paid for Plex.
It is unfortunate that this is gone, I would imagine syncing from “On Deck” is the easiest way to keep your syncs up to date with the shows/movies you care about without having to “manually” sync each and every item.
I did find one “trick” which isn’t nearly as efficient for TV shows but, its better than nothing @jaearess
I think you need experimental features on in plex web do to this but not 100% sure, and I also believe you need to be on plex beta.
Go to your TV Library on Plex Web, (has to be library, not recommended.) Click the + icon top right and create smart collection.
You have numerous options here to build a “sudo” on deck collection. I’ve attached a screenshot of what I built. Then save the collection, and set the collection to sync.

So another feature you took away from paid customers, nice.
Thanks! That mostly works, but do you know of a way to get it to only sync a single episode for each show? I’m “behind” on most shows, so when I try to sync this smart collection, it tries to sync every episode, even unwatched ones. If I specifically set it to sync only unwatched items when creating the sync, it tries to sync every unwatched episode.
Hmm that sounds like a bug. You could remove show last played and just leave episode unplayed and see if that works.
As another paying customer who uses this feature im also disappointed too discover this was taken away. Is there an official feature tracker for readding the feature?
I too am a paid customer and am not happy that I cannot sync an entire library anymore.
Just to clarify, entire libraries can still be synced. Just not “On Deck.” With my basic (and possibly incorrect) understanding of why this was removed, Plex could ideally restore this feature if the “merge on deck items” is unticked, and only one server is feeding the on deck list.
Alternatively, Plex could allow the “continue watching” items listed in each individual library to be synced.
@anon18523487 I would think auto syncing of on deck or continue watching would be a go to staple for those that want to sync. Any word on whether this feature will be reimplemented?
+1 for being really sad that this has been removed.
what on earth is the point of paying for plex without this feature? it’s probably just time to stop paying for plex.
+1 to easily be able to sync our Continue Watching items.
This has me seriously questioning the future of Plex. This pattern of removing features I value and adding ones I don’t is getting tiresome. Even as a paid ‘lifetime’ member, I’m looking forward to more competition in this space, either to get Plex back on track or to just switch products.
@edrock200, I really appreciate this suggestion! I’ve tweaked it to meet my needs in all ways except one. Let’s say I’ve got 8 shows, each with many unwatched episodes. I want to sync one episode of all 8 shows, but currently I get 8 episodes of just the first show. I do have the collection sorted by Date Viewed, so I’m most likely to at least get a show I’m most interested in, but there’s room for progress.
Any idea how to limit sync to just one or two episodes per show?
I’m not sure. you can sort it by date added, maybe that will have it sync in a particular order?
I did try that, but unfortunately, it just syncs 8 episodes of the show that aired one recent episode. In the end, I just made a whole lot of collections. One is ‘pseudo up next’ that only syncs episodes that aired in the last 8 days, which works as long as I don’t get behind. Then another for ‘pseudo watch next’ that syncs 4 episodes of the highest rated series that I’m in the middle of. I’d rather one or two episodes of all the series I’m in the middle of, but your suggestion helped me get things to a point that I can get by with. Thanks again!
All this re-engineering everyone has had to do to try and get content to sync will be useless since synched content will be removed from apps at the end of the year!
Has anybody figured out how to use the download feature we never wanted to download “Continue Watching” content without writing our own program to bring back a feature we loved in the “on Deck” days?
From what I have discovered about the “Download” feature, you can only set downloads by individual show and selecting “Next x unplayed episodes”. It’s kinda cool, but it will quickly become a full time task if you watch more than 4 shows.
If anybody can figure out how to set the apps to download continue watching, it would be amazing!
Here is what makes this super annoying.
I go to my On Deck items on my iPad and want to setup a download I long press on an episode and select download and it will just download that episode. There is no option to set the download options, like show or season.
To do that I have to first select show or season before setting up the download, And there is no default setting so I have to select how many episodes and when to remove each time. So many clicks, its not streamlined at all.
Know what would be helpful, a multi-select so I can select all the shows I want to download, select a current season option or entire show, how many episodes and remove settings for all of them at once instead of 5-7 clicks for EACH show.
Definitely seems like a regression for offline viewing. Years ago it was the sync feature that convinced me to buy lifetime Plex pass as my gym at the office is in a basement w/o wifi or cell reception. So sync was super convenient to keep my latest shows available. I really hope Plex rethinks this.
At the very least, allow some additional granular controls around smart collections wrt downloading. E.g. sync the latest 2 unwatched episodes of each show vs every single item.
