Synology 418play VS 918

Morning all, first post here. I am building out a home theater and realizing I want to also incorporate my media from DVD,Bluray, and 4k blu ray to media on a NAS. I have never done ripping but going to learn my way on this. I also would like to use the NAS for backup for my computers as well as a server for music for Sonos. Whats my best bet between the 2? I have read abunch of threads on it and the 918 has quad processor and comes with more ram. What have you guys found is better to server media etc…

hey I was hoping to serve 4k ripped content yes. unsure on transcode at moment haven’t dug that deep. Max would be 2 streams at once however most likely single stream.

budget for gas 550 diskless
4 bay at least
planning on running apple 4k tv
transcoding???
subtitles only when native language in movie is not spoken

Second important read: The actual hardware

If you are using an AppleTV you can accomplish Direct Play by using the Infuse Pro app as the client. No transcoding required. It also handles forced subtitles without issue.

The only limitation of the AppleTV right now is it cannot play back Atmos/DTS:X data contained in TrueHD/DTS-HD-MA containers. Infuse can direct play TrueHD/DTS-HD-MA 7.1, but will not be able to pass the spatial data.

I use this with a DS918+

If I may add to Scott,

You’ll see Infuse sends the data as LPCM. Don’t be surprised if the AVR’s lights don’t illuminate as expected.

ok, so no transcoding anyone want to give some insight on these two NAS now?

If you’re willing to curate (manage) subtitles yourself so you don’t get caught running out of CPU, anything with the J3455 CPU will do great.

Burning subtitles into the video image is extremely hard on the CPU. The video processing ASIC (which does the actual transcoding) can handle multiple video transcodes concurrently.

It comes down to number of bays for future expansion and budget.

ChuckPA can you shoot me a PM please. can’t seem to send you one!

@lycokayaker I’ve had my DS918+ two years now and have it doing all those things you’re asking and more. There’s a lot of noise on the net about RAM upgrade limitations so I called Synology. They said, "in spite of the specs, the 918 will love the 16GB of RAM however they will not support hardware or performance issues until you bring it back down to the spec’d max of 8GB. I’ve had no issues and 918 loves the RAM…especially with all I’m asking from it. Mine is loaded with 4 / 6TB Seagate IronWold NAS Drives.

My 918 tasks:

  • Running Plex (total home streaming) - over 200 HD, UHD 4K Movies, 5000+ Flac music files, home videos, Plex.tv, etc.
  • Running Synology Surveillance Station with 4 PoE 1080P Reolink outdoor cameras.
  • Running Synology MailServer and Webstation for my home-based business
  • Backing up 2 / 27" iMacs, 3 iPads, 2 iPhones, and 1 Android.
*** the DS918+ truly a workhorse. Great product.

I also have a DS216+II, with 4GB RAM, 2 / 12TB Seagate IronWolf NAS Drives configured to backup the 918.
