Synology DS1019+ Hardware Transcoding

Hi!
Quick question, I didn’t see this model in the Compatibility List, but will it support hardware transcoding?

I noticed it is using a CPU that has the Apollolake architecture

According to ChuckPA this is a requirement

According to this article it seems to have it but I want to make sure before I go and order one.

Best regards.

Thanks, yea it’s a nice NAS but yea $300 is a lot for an extra bay some memory might as well go with the DS918+.
Does the DS1819+ support hardware transcoding though?
I don’t think it has a Apollolake CPU

Hm ok, I found a used Synology DS1812+ I probably can get for around €750, or just get a new DS918+

At the moment I have a QNAP TS 421 with 4 drives already but it’s only around 11 TB in total, it has 3x3TB WD Red drives and 1x2TB WD RED

I want to replace it a new one with at least 2x10TB drives.
I also want to be able to run Docker, with these containers: sonarr, radarr, jackett pi-hole, transmission, plexpy

Which NAS would you suggest getting for that?

Alright thanks!
I think I will go for a DS918+ and a 10TB drive to start with, it seems like a very popular NAS too.
Apparently you can upgrade the RAM to 16GB too even if it’s not officially supported too, not sure if that’s required though.

Alright! I won’t then, thank you for the tip

I dont understand this comment - the 1019+ is only $649.99 while the 1819+ is $949.99 – so that is the $300 price difference you’re complaining about between the 918+ and 1019+ Definitely not “around” the same money, but yes you get more bays.

BHPHOTO retail prices, btw.

I have added the DS1019+ to the NAS Compatibility Guide. The J3455 CPU has been proven to be QSV stable for Plex use.

Secondarily, if I may explain what’s happening with the J3455 / 8GB vs 16GB memory questions (I wasn’t 100% clear on this point until a bit ago);

  1. At the time Intel was finalizing the J3455 CPU, only 4GB SODIMMs were available.
  2. Intel certified the CPU as having a maximum of 8GB of memory
  3. Since that date, 8GB SODIMMs have become readily available
  4. While the CPU can address it, Intel didn’t certify it at that capacity.
  5. Intel has the unfortunate reputation of not updating their specifications once published.

This having been said:

  1. Many see the CPU can address 16GB and appears stable when using good quality SODIMMs
  2. It should work but is not guaranteed by Intel officially
  3. The leads to Buyer beware or Your mileage may vary status.

Well, they be showing you funky prices:

The only place I’ve seen that $744 price is on overpriced Amazon resellers, like Beach Camera. Or NewEgg.

DS918+ $674 USD
DS1019+ $1003 USD
DS1819+ $1267 USD

I’m from Sweden
This is what they cost here  without shipping but it’s usally free

Amazing you can get them so cheap but your VAT is ridiculous low… :+1:

Amazon: Prices in USD

Yea almost $300 less for the same in Sweden… :money_with_wings::moneybag:

I’ll probably get the DS918+ and a 10TB drive for around $1000 here in Sweden :sweden:

I’m coming to Denmark in April - want me to carry one over for you?

Just build an Ubuntu server.

Hi!

FYI, I do own a DS1819+ and use it as a Plex Media Server, with the transcode options. Having a really good connection (at least 30MB/s… download & upload), I direct play as much as often. (Before that, I used a DS415play and it couldn’t transcode properly… so I knew I wouldn’t miss a QSV to transcode. That being said, I do not use 4K content and don’t wish to stream 4K from outside home.)

That being said, I tested my DS1819+ and it perfectly transcode 1080p / 20Mb/s videos. I guess it won’t do as good as a 918+ (which allows to transcode several streams)… but it does the job. If need be, I can test with several streams at the same time and see how the CPU handles it. (Not sure it will work but it might handle two streams.)

I have a question about DS1019+ transcoding. In this thread, it mentions 4k to 1080p, but what about transcoding to all other resolutions?

I bought the DS1019+ after reading/watching lots of positive reviews and have been generally impressed. I do, however, have some buffering issues (at all sorts of resolutions) when trying to watch “This Old House” recordings (made by HDHomerun) on the web client. HW transcoding is turned on (double-checked before posting!).

The identical recording on the Nvidia Shield TV (my previous Plex Media Server) plays at 1080 with no buffering.

No issues with my network, as far as I know.

Thanks for the info. I do believe you are correct about the interlace.

But…

The NAS reports about 35% CPU during playback. You would think there’s a little more grunt left in the machine.

So it probably is not a good idea to switch HDHomerun’s DVR engine to the DS1019+ as I’d just have all sorts of issues getting an uninterrupted picture to the screen?
