Synology DS 1520+ / 920+

Hi Guys,

I’m planning to buy the Synology DS1520+ and most of my files are 4K HDR movies with large bitrates. Wil the Synology direct play the files without transcoding on my Nvidia Shield?

Hey there

I actually dont have a NV Shield because my TV has Android OS but I think they should be similar. So I can direct play nearly everything on my Android TV so I think you should be fine if its only 4k HDR.

What bitrates do you have as an example?

For example 1917 4K HEVC HDR 88 Mbps

The NV shield has a gigabit ethernet connection btw

So Ive just tried it on my Android OS tv with a 4k HDR HEVC (main10) 7.1 True HD file (only arround 78Mbps). The audio (obviously) will transcode but it will ony take like 10-15 secs.

If I choose 5.1 it will direct play immediately. Hope this helps ya out a bit. So if you buy a NV Shield or Shield pro you should be fine. When I remember correnctly the newer one, 2019 versions, should also support Dolby Vision and Atmos.

If you still have a question about smth feel free to write me.

Great! Thanks for your help👍🏻

Hello Everyone. Currently… I use my Windows 10 PC | 32 GB Memory | Two 10 TB HDD | 400 GB download and 30 GB Upload (Spectrum).

I have been thinking of purchasing a NAS, but not sure which brand and model would be best for the daily task (480p, 720p, 1080p, and 4k). I do plan on Sharing the Entertainment Media with family and friends outside the home. I do not want to break the bank doing this. Can anyone share their current setup and recommendations, based on their good and bad experiences.

Thank you in advance.

Synology is super-easy to set up and get running. I love mine.

Id go with the 1520+ if I was on a budget. 5 drives and a pretty capable devise. Cant go wrong with that.

Hello ‘Trumpy81’. I really appreciate your prompt response.

Which NAS do you personally own and use for Plex? Also… What is your Download and Upload speed?

The PC, that I am currently using for Plex, has an AMD CPU, 32 GB memory, two 10 TB HDDs for Plex media, and a 1 TB HDD primary drive with Windows 10 Pro. This PC has not been able to stream 4K so well. I believe I was only able to stream 4K locally. When trying to stream 4K outside the home the PC shut down.

Oh and which UPS do you recommend?

Thank you ‘RockStar’ for responding.

I use the DS 1621xs+. Its much more powerful than the Celeron models but it doesnt support hardware transcoding, nor does it support SHR “out of the box”. You can enable the latter though.

For most people, Id say SHR is enough of a feature alone to choose Synology over any other brand.
