I’m considering to buy a Plex Pass and use it for DVR. Is the Synology DS414 capable of playing and recording live tv? What minimum requirements does Plex ask for this?
The DS414 is an ARMv7 based system. It has no video transcode abilities to convert MPEG2 to H.264 (common in North America)
If the tuner is H.264 output capable, you might be able to do it but there are no guarantees. You are dealing with an extremely weak processor (4 years old) plus it’s an ARMv7 (no transcoding capability).
It’s a good NAS but you’re better off running PMS on your computer
Thank you for this helpful answer. Any Synology NAS recommendations for Plex that does transcode? Or should i build a headless linux computer and run PMS from it? With the requirement that it runs 'silen’t because I’d like to set it up in the meter cupboard in the hallway and don’t want to add any extra noise there.
I suggest you look in the forum for comparison.
I am preparing the new NAS guide which has all current models included.
Here are the 2018 Synology products. The Celeron processors have hardware transcode capability.

You should also be aware that the Celeron’s have HW transcoding, but Plex does not yet support MPEG 2 HW transcoding (yet, maybe someday?).
“Patience, ye of so little faith” >:) haha
Ha! I know @ChuckPA, I know. I’m not trying to be impatient, just excited. I wish you had tipped us Plex Pass user to the secret in the Beta Forum. Just know we all appreciate the hard work you do!
I’m just messing with you
